A quaint village on the shores of Lake Head, Haliburton is a gateway to the wilderness of southern Ontario. The nearby Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve encompasses 60,000 acres of privately owned lakes, forests, streams and wetlands, providing habitat for countless wildlife in the beautiful Haliburton Highlands.

  Room amenities: Twenty-four double occupancy rooms in six different buildings offer participants clean and simple accommodations. There are a limited number of single rooms available on a first registered, first served basis. All linens, towels and face cloths are provided. Your units will have 2 or 3 bedrooms, a lounge and a complete kitchen or kitchenette including coffeemaker, microwave and refrigerator shared among 2 - 5 people. Some with fireplaces. Accommodations are accessed via 4 or 5 steps. Please note that all cabins are shared with other participants.
  Facility amenities: Meals: Nutritious and delicious meals are served in the Cookhouse. Fruit is always available. We can accommodate vegetarians, vegans and anyone with food allergies or special food restrictions. Please inform us of any food restrictions prior to your arrival. This information can be included on the Health & Safety Form in the section dealing with allergies.

  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. A signed waiver is required from participants. Passports are required for all air travel to/from the US. On June 1, 2009, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require those traveling to/from the United States by land and sea to also have a passport or other appropriate secure document. This shuttle will take you from the program site at Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve to the bus stop in Haliburton to catch the bus to Toronto.
 
Driving Directions
  By Bus Once arriving at Toronto Airport, you will need to go to the Arrivals Level at Ground Transportation to catch the airport shuttle to the bus station in downtown Toronto. From there you need to catch the Can Air Coach to Haliburton. You can purchase the ticket prior to boarding. Can Air Coach 1-800-387-7097 for rates and schedules as these could change. Pick up from the bus depot in Haliburton can be arranged. We recommend that participants arrive the day before and stay at the Silver Maple Motel (about 100 yards from the bus depot). This hotel is available before and after the program - contact the motel directly at 1-705-457-2600 for reservations and rates.
  Toronto Drive north on HWY 400 to Hwy 11. At Bracebridge travel east on 118 past hwy 35 to West Guilford. Turn left (north) on County Road #7 and travel 19 kilometers, 12 miles and make a right at Redkenn Drive. Haliburton Forest Base Camp is straight ahead, one half kilometer.
Equipment Requirements: Optional to bring personal binoculars for birding.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival and Orientation
(Sunday, September 1)
   
 Arrive To: LODGE CHECK-IN: Check in to accommodations after 3:00 p.m. Registration will take place at the main office where your welcome packet containing the most up-to-date schedule and program information. Please be aware that various circumstances may require adjusting programming. ORIENTATION: Participants will meet at the Seminar Building for a walking tour of Base Camp. A wine and cheese social is to follow.
 Dinner: Following our wine and cheese social dinner will be served at the Cookhouse Restaurant, a 60 seat restaurant overlooking the picturesque Kennisis Lake. Cash bar, beer and coolers available. MEALS NOTE: Low Fat, Vegetarian, Low Salt, Gluten Free, Peanut Free. We can accommodate most food allergies/preferences.
 Evening: PRESENTATION: Haliburton Forest. Slide show highlighting the philosophy behind the management of this privately owned 60,000 acre reserve. Topics include forestry, wildlife, ecotourism and education.

Day 2: Introduction to Wolves/Wolf Centre/Astronomy
(Monday, September 2)
   
 Breakfast: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Introduction to Wolves. A general presentation on wolves including topic areas such as territory, social structure, life cycle as well as comparisons to dogs and coyotes will be provided by David Bishop, General Manager. EXCURSION: Resident Wolf Pack. Short hike to elevated observation deck affords a possible viewing of our resident pack.
 Lunch: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Wolf Centre. Meet the Wolf Centre's resident pack of wolves with our onsite wildlife biologist. You will have a more in depth look at the wolf including myths and legends, wolves and media. View an interpreted feeding through one way glass. The centre has a theatre, displays, games, viewing area and gift shop.
 Dinner: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size. Cash bar, beer and coolers available.
 Evening: EXCURSION/PRESENTATION: Astronomy. Led by a local astronomer, participants are guided through a short solar system walk, then given a presentation in our planetarium followed by some open, dark skies observation looking through 3 high-powered telescopes.

Day 3: Canoeing on Lake MacDonald/Walk in the Clouds Canopy Tour/Natural History Presentation
(Tuesday, September 3)
   
 Breakfast: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Morning: EXCURSION: Canoeing on Lake MacDonald. Outdoor pursuits afternoon. Education staff available to teach/supervise canoeing on beautiful MacDonald Lake. Great swim spot also with outhouse facilities. Option to go on self-guided hike on trails near accommodation.
 Lunch: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Walk in the Clouds Canopy Tour. This guided experience includes a 10 minute hike along the Pelaw River, a 15 minute paddle in a voyageur-style canoe to get to the undeveloped site where we have built 500 meters (520 yards) of suspension bridges in an old growth White Pine forest. Snack and drink of a platform suspended 23 meters (70 feet) above the forest floor. Shorter boardwalk route available or participants can opt out of boardwalk hike and just enjoy the site.  Dinner: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size. Cash bar, beer and coolers available.
 Evening: PRESENTATION: Natural History. During the summer months Haliburton Forest hosts Tuesday evening Natural History Presentations. Each week is a unique and exciting topic. Most presentations are made by students conducting research within the Forest. On occasion special guests are called in from the local community.

Day 4: Wild Woods Walk/Sawmill/Introduction to Birding
(Wednesday, September 4)
   
 Breakfast: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Wild Woods Walk. Guided nature interpretation hike on the Wild Woods Walk trail with our outdoor education staff. Hike focuses on the forest ecology of the area as well as wildlife signs and sightings. Hike length and pace is modified to meet the range of physical abilities in the group.
 Lunch: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Sawmill. Haliburton Forest is a truly integrated forestry company, controlling its forest products from seedling to stump, to final retail wood product, even beyond the sawmill. Participants will have an opportunity to tour our modern sawmill and learn about our sustainable forest management practices, being Canada's first recipient of the FSC certificate.
 Dinner: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self serve-buffet or platter service to table depending on group size. Cash bar, beer and coolers available.
 Evening: PRESENTATION: Introduction to Birdwatching. Birding is a rewarding, and fun past time that is enjoyed throughout the world. Birding brings people outdoors, builds interest ranging from photography and illustration to species identification. Birds are beautiful and delights to watch as they socialize, nest, and simply enjoy their surroundings. It is very easy to become hooked on birding once initial steps are taken. Enjoy this Introduction to Bird Watching and you may become hooked as well.

Day 5: Morning Bird Hike/Bird Banding/Village of Haliburton/Wolf Howl
(Thursday, September 5)
   
 Breakfast: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Birding Hike. Join our staff for an early morning birding hike. If scheduling permits we will arrange for a bird banding session with an ornithologist. The evening before mist nets will be set-up. In the morning you will have the opportunity to watch as Bruce bands the birds that have been captured and possibly assist him.
 Lunch: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size
 Afternoon: EXCURSION: Village of Haliburton. Your host will take you on a guided tour of the Village of Haliburton to check out some of the hot spots in town. Enjoy a coffee and see the sites!
 Dinner: Farewell Dinner at the Cookhouse.
 Evening: FIELD TRIP: Wolf Howl. Short introduction to the wolf howl, reasons and characteristics. Group walks about 500 meters to howling site to see if we can get our resident pack to respond. Participants will sometimes be asked to join in a chorus howl.

Day 6: Farewell/Meet with Management of the Haliburton Forest/Departures
(Friday, September 6)
   
 Breakfast: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self-serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size.
 Morning: EXCURSION: Siberian Huskies. After a short walk to the kennels you will have the opportunity to meet our friendly Siberian Huskies! Evaluations and wrap up.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: History and Future of Haliburton Forest. Visit with management and hear about Haliburton Forest’s history and future plans with the 77,000 acre multi-use reserve.
 Lunch: Served at the Cookhouse usually a hot table, self serve buffet or platter service to table depending on group size. Program ends after lunch. Bagged lunch available for those who would like to depart early.
 Afternoon: DEPARTURES: Independent departures after lunch. Check-out time is 11:00 a.m.
