In the fifth century B.C., the Celts began an expansion across Western Europe that continues to influence the language, art and culture of modern day. Join scholar and folklorist Dr. Mick Moloney for a fascinating exploration into the epic journey of the Celts, tracing their history from its beginning 2500 years ago in Austria through to the most beautiful and remote parts of Europe in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, The Isle of Man, Cornwall, Brittany, Asturias and Galicia in Northwest Spain.

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of the Ohio River Valley in the western part of the state, the county seat of Ripley features a historic downtown and theater and easy access to nearby areas of natural beauty, abundant wildlife and hiking trails.

Mick Moloney

Dr. Mick Moloney — folklorist, professional musician, and radio and television personality — was awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1999. He is the author of “Far From the Shamrock Shore: The Story of Irish American History Through Song.” He has recorded and produced over 50 albums of traditional music, has hosted three folk music programs on America Public Television, and currently teaches at New York University in the Irish studies program.

Anytime after 2:00 pm is check-in time. Participants go to dinner at 5:00 pm. There will be an orientation at 7:00 pm. You will be staying at Cedar Lakes Conference Center that night.

Driving Directions
  If you are driving from the east. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about three miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If you are traveling from the east, consider Interstate-68 and Route 40 through Cumberland, MD to Morgantown, WV, south on Interstate-79 to Clarksburg, west on Route 50 to Parkersburg, and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132, at bottom of exit ramp, make a left on Route 21 north, go under interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive, Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. Many of the by-ways off the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33 East, despite AAA recommendations).
  If you are driving from the west. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about three miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If traveling from the west, drive through Columbus, OH on Interstate-70 and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a left turn on Route 21 north, go underneath interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. From Louisville, KY, travel on Interstate-64 to Charleston and north on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a right turn on Route 21 north, make immediate first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right side of road. Many of the by-ways off of the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33, East, despite AAA recommendations).

Day 2: General introduction. The Emergence of the Celts in Eastern Europe and early Celtic Art in Austria and Switzerland.

 Morning: Celtic settlements in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Brittany. Irish mythology and legends and the Celtic imprint on early Irish monastic art and letters.

 Afternoon: Irish poetry, literature, music and dance.
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Evening: Evening entertainment in Holt Lodge meeting room.

Day 3: The cultural traditions of Scotland.

 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Afternoon: The Isle of Man and Cornwall. Celtic languages and their survival.
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Evening: Evening entertainment in Holt Lodge meeting room.

Day 4: The Continental Celts of Brittany, Asturia and Galicia.

 Afternoon: Pipes and reeds. Fairs, festivals and feast days. Food and ritual. The Holy Grail and the Pilgrim's journey.
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Evening: Evening entertainment in Holt Lodge meeting room.

Day 5: Celtic Cultures in North America.
(Thursday, April 11)

 Morning: The Music and Dance of Newfoundland, Cape Breton Island, Quebec and Ottawa. The Celtic imprint on Old Time American, Bluegrass and Country Music.
 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Afternoon: Minstrely, vaudeville, variety and Tin Pan Alley. Irish tenors in North America. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Riverdance mania.
 Dinner: Our final evening meal will be served to us by the friendly dining hall staff at Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Evening: We will end our week with a fabulous concert of Traditional Irish Music featuring Mick Moloney and friends.
