George Vanderbilt was the son of the wealthiest man in America at the turn of the century and his home, Biltmore, is an outstanding example of the country estates built during the Gilded Age. Learn about the Vanderbilt family, explore the grand house, enjoy the lavish Christmas decorations and become familiar with the men who built Biltmore and designed the extensive gardens and winery.

Tucked into the glorious mountains of Western North Carolina, Black Mountain is an ideal location to take advantage of the history, culture and natural environs of Asheville and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Its historic downtown features local craftsmen demonstrating iron works, dulcimer making and hand-thrown pottery.

| | Kevan Frasier is an enthusiastic lecturer with an amazing depth of knowledge of the local region, with particular interest in the Vanderbilt family and the Biltmore Estate. Kevan was as a member of the history faculty at UNC Asheville, teaching both United States and African history. Since that time, he has continued to teach but today serves as the university’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations. | | | | Hilary Dirlam
| | Hilary fell in love with old-time music when she first heard the fiddle at a county fair when she was five. Since then, although she spent time in other genres (classical, jazz, pop, Indian Classical and Tibetan) she has always returned to the music of the Appalachian Mountains. She teaches old-time string instruments, performed in a duet (“Antique Road Show”) is the director of Mars Hill College’s Blue Ridge Old-Time Music Week, and produces recordings of Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns. | | | |
