Join us for the annual Fall Festival and listen to staff and volunteers tell stories of Lincoln as we demonstrate preparations needed for winter in this reconstructed village.

Highlights

• Delight in a chance to dress in period clothing and talk with visitors during the annual Fall Festival with other local volunteers.
• Demonstrate a variety of historical 1830's activities including weaving, spinning, soap and candle making, wool carding, food preparation, assisting in the cooper and blacksmith shops, repairing split rail fences, maintenance of trails and the documenting of demonstration activities.
• Explore the nearby town of Petersburg, its history and Lincoln connections, and learn about the unique archeology and anthropology of the area and Sangamon River.

Date Specific Information

10-10-2012

2012 projects: 1. An on-site coal “shed” is needed to store coal both as a tool for efficiency but also to maintain historical accuracy. You will help build a small structure, approximately 6 ft X 10 ft, in order to directly load and store coal on the blacksmith’s shop site. The structure will be made of hewn logs, with a shingle roof that will be built using period tools and methods. 2. In addition to documenting the accurate process of building the coal shed, some participants will work with local volunteers to document other specialized processes related to household or small business tasks, such as soap/candle/broom making, basket weaving, chair caning, wool washing and carding and similar. Skills to be used: writing, photographing and drawing, as you observe the volunteer doing these things, so that permanent records can be developed and passed on to new local volunteers.

 RiverBank Lodge
Type: Lodge
Description: Back in October of 2003, four local investors came together to form RiverBank Lodge, LLC for the purpose of transforming the old First National Bank building in Petersburg, IL into a modern lodging facility in the Spring of 2006. In fact, the name “RiverBank Lodge” was chosen not only to reflect the fact that we are situated along the banks of the Sangamon River, but also to reflect on it’s history as a banking institution. Be inspired by the unique and dramatic architecture that includes tree-integrated roof lines, and a soaring 50 foot ceiling spanned by a second-floor balcony viewing the Sangamon River. Our location in Petersburg is ideally close to Lincolns New Salem State Park, an 1830s recreation of Abraham Lincoln's home as a young adult on his own. Guests can stroll the walkable selection of downtown Petersburg, around which are arrayed a variety of Antique shops, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Golfing, canoeing and kayaking, and winery tours are also in the immediate area.
