This class will feature more complex concepts for the advancing intermediate player. Focus on useful conventions such as weak two bids, strong two clubs, negative doubles, transfer bidding, strong major suit raises and Roman Key card. Also featured in this course will be concepts on play of the hand, signals and partnership defense.

Jekyll Island

One of Georgia’s southernmost barrier islands, Jekyll Island has a storied past. At the turn of the century, it hosted an exclusive club that attracted the likes of the Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Much of that world is preserved in a historic district near the riverfront. Today, the island is popular for golfing, fishing and kayaking.

  Start of Program:
Program begins with Road Scholar check-in and resort check-in at 4:00 pm. You will be staying at Hampton Inn & Suites that night.
  End of Program:
Program ends at 10:30 AM. You will be staying at Hampton Inn & Suites the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. You will be sent a Road Scholar Health and Safety form prior to the program start date. This form is required and must be completed and returned to the address shown on the document prior to your attendance in the program. Road Scholar Health & Safety Information form. Please send directly to the Program Coordinator no later than 3 weeks prior to the program.

Parking is free of charge. There is a $5 entry fee each time you come onto the island. If you stay a week, you may get a discounted pass for coming and going.

  I-95 to Jekyll Island Take Interstate 95 South to Exit 29 At Exit 29 take U.S. Highway 17 North approximately 5 miles Turn right on to Jekyll Island Causeway Travel across causeway approximately 6 miles to Jekyll Island until road "T's" in front of Convention Center (Beachview Drive) Turn right on to Beachview Drive and travel approximately 1 miles to hotel on left.
Elevation Note: Elevation is just above sea level.

Day 2: Advanced and Duplicate Bridge lecture, tourney and supervised play.
(Monday, October 22)
   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast bar.
 Morning: Participants will receive a book by Shirley Silverman, "Advanced and Duplicate Bridge Student Text". Opening Weak Two Bids, Opening Notrump Bids, Stayman and Jacoby transfers will be covered.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Supervised bridge play and duplicate boards.
 Dinner: Dinner
 Evening: Advanced bridge instruction and supervised play at the hotel.

Day 3: Advanced and Duplicate Bridge lecture, tourney and supervised play.

Day 4: Advanced and Duplicate Bridge lecture and free time.

 Morning: Strong two clubs, Gerber, Blackwood,and Roman Key Card.
 Lunch: Lunch.
 Afternoon: Free afternoon to explore the island or conference room open for bridge play.
 Dinner: One dinner is excluded to enjoy on your own in award winning restaurants
 Evening: Enjoy your free evening or bridge play in the conference room.

Day 5: Advanced and Duplicate Bridge lecture, tourney and supervised play.

 Morning: Preemptive Bids: Every bridge player is familiar with preemptive bids but few use them to great advantage. Preemptive bids might be described as the “great equalizer” because, no matter how good your opponents are, they will not be able to cope with every situation. Also covered - Negative Doubles, limit and strong major (Jacoby two no trump) and splinter bids.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Supervised bridge play and duplicate boards.
 Dinner: Dinner
 Evening: Supervised bridge play.

  Jekyll Island General Overview
Jekyll Island's Historic District has several speciality shops as well as the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, once the clubhouse for many of America's elite business men. Other areas of interest located near Jekyll Island are St. Simons Island, home to several historic places including Fort Frederica, Bloody Marsh Battle site, etc. There are also other interesting islands located near Jekyll Island including Sapelo Island where you will find a plantation once owned by R. J. Reynolds and Cumberland Island home to many wild horses. Other areas of interest near Jekyll Isalnd include Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, an old rice plantation and Brunswick Georgia which has many historic buildings and landmarks as well as several antique shops. Jekyll Island is located approximately one hour south of Historic Savannah Georgia.
