The thrill of spotting any member of the Big Five elephants, leopards, lions, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo is reason enough to journey to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. But these magnificent creatures arent the only ones who inhabit the grasslands and deltas of the region. Hippos, zebras, giraffes and antelope are just a few other residents that can be spotted during game drives along the Okavango Delta or in South Luangwa National Park, while crocodiles and a myriad of bird species bask in the waters along the Chobe and Zambezi rivers. Join wildlife experts and local residents for an insightful exploration into the habitats and conservation issues surrounding Africas natural wonders.

Earths last Eden -- the Okavango Delta fans out over the Kalahari sands, creating thousands of tiny green islands that sustain lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard, elephant and innumerable antelope and bird species. On-site lectures introduce termites and their affect on the Okavango Delta, delta hydrology and geology and animal behavior.

Helen Malisan
Helen Malisans passion for exploration began in high school when she visited Italy, her ancestral country. After completing her final year at school, she immediately joined South African Airways where she worked for 10 years. In 1993, her love for nature and South Africa inspired her to complete the necessary courses to become a wilderness excursion leader, spurring her career as a safari leader in Namibia and Zambia. Helen says her interest in people, nature and animals inspires her work.
 
Andre Joubert
Andre Joubert has held numerous positions in managing and providing wildlife education throughout Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. This South African-born outdoorsman served as park warden of Skeleton Coast Park in Namibia and chief warden of Botswanas Khama Rhino Sanctuary, whose objective was to save Botswanas last remaining White Rhinoceros population. Andre shares a passion for working with people and instilling his strong wilderness ethics in public education.
 
Benson Siyawareva
Benson Siyawareva was born in the remote village of Zaka in southern Zimbabwe. His love of nature started when he joined the Boy Scouts, where he experienced camping, wildlife tracking and viewing. Benson became a qualified, professional guide in 1988 and has been named one of the Best 15 Safari Guides in the Cond Nast Traveler magazine. His enthusiasm and vast knowledge never cease to amaze participants lucky enough to travel with him.
 
Lisa Reed
Lisa Reed was born in Zimbabwe, spent her school years in South Africa, and now lives in Botswana. She has worked or visited most Southern and East African safari destinations, and has managed safari camps on her own and with others since being in Botswana. Lisa has a natural affinity with children and enjoys passing on her years of experience and knowledge to the next generation. She has been leading safaris for Road Scholar for more than nine years.

  Description: An authentic, tented safari camp is set up in a private location with Hemingway-style safari tents. Each tent has two beds with linens and an attached bathroom with chemical toilet and bucket shower (hot water on request). All meals are taken in casual safari style near the campfire and shaded by many large trees.

  Room amenities: Tents have plentiful floor space and are tall enough to stand up in. Back wall is zippered and connects to bathroom area, so you do not exit the tent in order to access the shower and toilet. Tent walls have large screens allowing for ventilation and views; screens can be covered for privacy and warmth.
  Facility amenities: A separate dining tent is set up with a table and chairs; meals are taken here in the shade of the tent. Wake up calls are provided each morning, and laundry services are provided free of charge. Please note that under garments are not washed by the camp staff due to local customs.

 Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge

  Description: The Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge is a beautiful thatched lodge resting by the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. Due to its border with the Chobe Forest Reserve, Imbabala is a regular stop for elephant herds. The lodge features a lounge, dining room, and bar area but meals are often served outside by a hospitable staff. Rooms are stone and thatch mini-lodges with breathtaking views of the Zambezi River and a watering hole where animals often congregate. During the day guests can take advantage of morning and afternoon game drives, river safaris, walking safaris, fishing safaris, and more. Imbabala has an excellent location for those exploring Southern Africa: the lodge is approximately 30 minutes to Chobe National Park (Botswana), 90 minutes to Livingstone (Zambia) Airport, and 60 minutes to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) Airport.

  Room amenities: Each free standing thatched chalet possesses a front patio looking towards the Zambezi River with a screened front entrance, opening to the bed area (beds include mosquito nets.) Behind the bed area you find a dividing wall with access to your private bathroom as well as an outside shower located at the farthest end of the chalet. Electricity is provided in the rooms; recharging of batteries is possible.

 Thorntree River Lodge

  Description: Thorntree River Lodge is a wonderfully situated camp on the banks of the Zambezi River with comfortable stone and thatch chalets hidden in the tangle of lush riverine bush. All chalets have large private bathrooms and are shaded by a large thatched canopy. The atmosphere is informal and one of classic safari style. The wide sweeping panorama of the river lends a special magic to the location. Thorntree's riverside location and its unique position within the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park allows for a wide choice of activities, including sunset cruises, game-drives, cultural tours, fishing, and visit to Victoria Falls. The esteemed national park is a sanctuary for white rhino as well as a haven for many other species including giraffe, sable, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and a wide variety of birds.

  Room amenities: All chalets are built of stone with a thatched-roof and private deck overlooking the river. Chalets include private bath with a bathtub/hand-held shower, outdoor shower, fan, and patio. Rooms have electrical outlets for recharging batteries and mosquito nets on beds. Elephants and hippos are sometimes seen on the lawn.

  Description: Mfuwe Lodge is situated in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park and is built between two spectacular lagoons. The open plan design keeps the comfort and relaxation of guests in mind, but also capitalizes on the fact that an African wilderness experience is a blend of colors, textures, sounds, aromas and sights unmatched anywhere else in the world. Each chalet has a large private deck overlooking one of the lagoons. From the comfort of the lodge you can view Africa's majestic wildlife as animals come down to drink. Elephant, hippopotamus, many antelope species and crocodiles are plentiful in this area.

  Start of Program:
Program starts with dinner at 7:00pm at the hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. You will be staying at Courtyard Hotel Eastgate that night.
  End of Program:
Program ends at approximately 4:00pm at the airport in Johannesburg, South Africa following the arrival of the flight from Lusaka, Zambia. You will be staying at Mfuwe Lodge the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. US passports need a minimum of five blank visa pages for this program (NOTE: blank visa pages, not the amendment/endorsement pages at the back); Canadian passports need seven blank pages. Signed liability waivers required for safari lodges and Program Provider (Explore, Inc).

  Transportation from site: A group transfer from Mfuwe Lodge to the Mfuwe Airport is included for everyone. The flights from Mfuwe to Lusaka, Zambia and Lusaka to Johannesburg are also included in the program price. Upon arrival in Johannesburg you connect to international departures; no further ground transfers are needed unless ongoing travel is planned. Explore can help with ongoing travel arrangements if needed.

Day 2: Arrivals/Orientation

 Afternoon: Arrive Johannesburg where you clear Customs and are met and transferred 20 minutes to the Courtyard Hotel. Enjoy the complimentary snacks and beverages during happy hour in the main lounge of the hotel.
 Dinner: Dinner with the group in the dining room.
 Evening: Orientation session and group introductions following dinner.

Day 3: Fly to Botswana/Drive to Moremi
(Friday, May 3)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer to the Johannesburg airport to board your commercial flight to Maun, Botswana.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided.
 Afternoon: En-route to Moremi Game Reserve, you stop at a local crafts center where you have a demonstration on how to make paper out of elephant dung. Afterwards, embark on your drive in 4x4 vehicles through typical Botswana woodlands to Moremi and your campsite; there is a good chance of seeing game along the way. Arrive at your private mobile tented camp and settle in. Located in the southeastern part of the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the world. It is particularly well known for its predators, especially one of the most endangered carnivores in Africa- the wild dog. Lion and leopard are commonly found as well as herds of buffalo, elephant and hippo. Game in Moremi is abundant and varied, and includes tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, sable and giraffe. Later this afternoon your group leader gives an overview on the history and culture of Botswana.
 Dinner: Appetizers and a feast prepared by the camp cook. Dine in the open air under the stars. Campfire after dinner.

Day 4: The Okavango Delta/Termites
(Saturday, May 4)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Drive through a large variety of different vegetation types, down winding tracks, through mopane forests and across lush grasslands in search of plains game and other species. The scenic beauty of Moremi adds to your experience of Botswanas verdant Garden of Eden, the Okavango Delta.
 Lunch: At camp.
 Afternoon: During tea time, your group leader gives a lecture on termites and their affect on the environment. Afterward, embark on a game drive. Lion and leopard are commonly found as well as herds of buffalo, elephant and hippo.
 Dinner: At camp under the stars.

Day 5: Endangered Carnivores/Delta Hydrology and Geology
(Sunday, May 5)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Game drive to search for wild dog and other endangered carnivores.
 Lunch: At camp.
 Afternoon: Class on Delta hydrology and geology during tea time. Afterward, take one last game drive in Moremi keeping your eyes open for tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, elephant, sable and giraffe.
 Dinner: Enjoy sumptuous cuisine under the stars.

Day 6: Chobe National Park/Elephant Social Structure
(Monday, May 6)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Transfer to a nearby airstrip with game viewing en-route. Take a small aircraft charter flight from the airstrip to Kasane (Chobe National Park). Upon arrival in Kasane, you are met and driven a short distance to a local lodge for lunch.
 Lunch: Buffet lunch at a Chobe lodge.
 Afternoon: You explore the Chobe River by motorboat where you may come face to face with the elephant, buffalo and other wildlife that gather on the banks of the river to drink and bathe. Immerse yourself in the unique environment viewing numerous birds including sacred ibis, blue heron, goliath heron, saddle-billed storks, marabou storks and little egrets. Chobe National Park remains one of Africas prime game-viewing areas. Here one finds all of the Big Five, except for rhino. This is elephant country, home to the largest population of elephants in the worldmany of these great grey giants can be seen at this time of year. (Note that seasonality makes a big difference in how much game you will see. If its dry you will see larger herds; if it has recently rained the animals will be more dispersed.) The park forms part of Botswanas northern-most border and is a contrast of desert aridity and flood plains. The Chobe region is best known for its vast magnificent river and floodplains filled with grazing herds of big game. Buffalo, sable, lion, leopard, hippo, hyena, and many species of antelope find safety in this huge national park. Chobe is one of Africas most pristine ecosystems and greatest wildlife refuges. Following the Chobe boat cruise, you are driven across the Zimbabwe border to Imbabala Lodge, where you have a chance to settle in and enjoy the riverfront scenery. This evening, your group leader gives a lecture on elephant social structure and behavior.

Day 7: Game Drives/Overview of Zimbabwe
(Tuesday, May 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the lodge.
 Morning: Morning game drive in the private reserve surrounding the lodge. The 5,000 acre national park concession has nearly nine miles of private Zambezi River frontage, and it borders the Chobe Forest Reserve which is renowned for its massive elephant population. Game drives here are taken in open-air safari vehicles in the early morning and late afternoons into evening, moving through the plains searching for predators and other game.
 Lunch: Lunch at the lodge.
 Afternoon: Your group leader leads a discussion on the past, present and future of Zimbabwe. Following tea, you embark on a game viewing boat cruise on the Zambezi River. Here you may have the chance to spot wildlife coming to drink and bathe in the river, as well as observe the multitude of birds that gather on the rivers banks.
 Dinner: Dinner at the lodge.

Day 8: Victoria Falls on Zimbabwe Side/Overview of Zambia
(Wednesday, May 8)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the lodge.
 Morning: A morning departure takes you to Victoria Falls, where you have a chance to view the Falls on the Zimbabwean side. Since the waterfall spans the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is visible from both countries, but the majority of the water falls on the Zimbabwean side. Viewing the Falls from this side provides numerous overlooks and truly gives you a feel for the full majesty of this natural wonder. Here your group leader shows you how through the millennia the forces of nature have created this marvelous spectacle, Africas greatest waterfall. Afterward, transfer over the Zambian border via the stunning bridge that spans the Batoka Gorge just downstream from the Falls.
 Lunch: Lunch at the lodge in Livingstone.
 Afternoon: This afternoon, your group leader gives an overview on Zambian history and culture.
 Dinner: Dinner at the lodge.

Day 9: Livingstone Museum and Victoria Falls
(Thursday, May 9)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Your group leader gives a lecture on David Livingstone and his discovery of the Falls. Transfer into the old colonial town of Livingstone and visit the Livingstone Museum. The museum is located in the heart of town and is known for its archaeological and ethnographic displays. Its premier exhibit is a collection of letters, notes and other artifacts that belonged to David Livingstone. You also visit the famed Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is where the Zambezi River opens out into an extravaganza of roaring, spray-tumbled water, known to the locals as "Mosi oa Tunya" (the smoke that thunders). Few sights are as awe-inspiring as this when the ground rumbles with the forces of the water. You view the Falls this morning from the Zambian side. Day 10: Local Orphanage/Fly to Mfuwe/South Luangwa Valley
(Friday, May 10)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Transfer to a nearby local orphanage where you have a chance to experience Zambian life and culture, and interact with the children and foster parents. Afterward, transfer to the Livingstone Airport and depart on a scheduled charter flight to the Mfuwe Airport in the South Luangwa Valley.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided.
 Afternoon: Upon arrival into Mfuwe, you are met and taken by 4x4 vehicle to Mfuwe Lodge. After settling into your room, depart on a game drive for approximately two hours. Game drives in South Luangwa National Park are taken in open-air safari vehicles moving slowly searching for wild game.
 Dinner: At the lodge. Dinners here vary between a three-course meal and a buffet. Also, a traditional South African barbeque or braii, where guests eat in the outdoor eating area or boma," is offered at times.

Day 11: Bush Walk/Game Drive/Night Wildlife
(Saturday, May 11)
   
 Breakfast: Early continental breakfast followed by mid-morning snacks in the bush (tea and coffee, muffins and biscuits)
 Morning: This morning you either participate in a guided bush walk with an armed guard or go on a game drive with refreshments and snacks. During the bush walk, your guide gives a lecture on animal tracking.
 Brunch: Brunch consists of a full buffet including many cooked breakfast and lunch items as well as salads and desserts.
 Afternoon: Leisure time during the heat of mid-day. You can relax around the pool or view game from the deck of your private chalet. Afternoon tea with lecture on the unique surrounding ecosystem and the structure of the Zambian National Parks. Afterward, enjoy a day-into-night game drive. While on night drives leopard, hyena, porcupine, civet, genet and honey badger are commonly sighted.
 Dinner: At the lodge.

Day 12: Tracking Wildlife/Lion Social Structure
(Sunday, May 12)
   
 Breakfast: Early continental breakfast at the lodge and mid-morning snacks on drive.
 Morning: Again this morning you have the choice of a game drive or a bush walk with an armed guide and an emphasis on spoor, vegetation, birds, insects and bush lore; discussion on how to track animals.
 Brunch: Full buffet.
 Afternoon: Over tea, your group leader gives a lecture on lion social structure and behavior. End the afternoon with a game drive in the South Luangwa National Park.
 Dinner: At the lodge.

Day 13: Final Game Viewing/Local School and Village
(Monday, May 13)
   
 Breakfast: Early morning tea/coffee and continental breakfast.
 Morning: Search the surrounding area for animals that may have eluded you thus far.
 Brunch: Full buffet brunch followed by the mid-day at leisure.
 Afternoon: Visit to a nearby school, village and textiles manufacturing site. You are shown around the school and learn about the schools projects, as well as have the opportunity to interact with the children. You also interact with locals to learn about the villages tree planting and fish farming. Afterward, visit a textiles manufacturing shop which employs and trains members of the local community, making beautiful, hand-painted textiles.
 Dinner: Farewell dinner at the lodge.
 Evening: Enjoy one last evening as a group, reminiscing about the program's experiences.

Day 14: Fly to Lusaka/Departures
(Tuesday, May 14)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Transfer to the Mfuwe Airport for an hour-long scheduled charter flight to Lusaka, Zambia.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided.
 Afternoon: Board a commercial flight to Johannesburg. Upon arrival in Johannesburg, connect to your international flight back to the U.S. or ongoing travel.

Day 15: Arrival Home

 Morning: Early morning arrivals back in the U.S.

  Livingstone (Victoria Falls) Adrenalin activities
The Victoria Falls area is known as an adventure capital, and there are plenty of adrenalin activities offered in the area! Activities include bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls bridge, a gorge swing which swings you out across the Batoka Gorge, abseiling into the Batoka Gorge, and the "flying fox" cable slide which is a zip line across the gorge.   Elephant Interaction
The walk begins as the elephants head into the bush to naturally browse. Guests follow along and observe as these majestic animals feed, play, socialize and sometimes swim. The elephants wander through riverine bush and the banks of the Zambezi River. There is one guide per elephant to discuss all aspects of the African elephant as well as the bush. Time spent walking with the elephants is approximately 30 minutes. At the end of the walk, guests will have a chance to interact with the elephants.   Fishing
Your fishing guide on the Upper Zambezi River is also an expert on birding and wildlife, a profusion of which you will see during your excursion. There are no real seasonal variation and fish are caught year round. The very best time for Tiger Fish is during the hot months between August and March when the fish are more active. Generally, a catch and release policy is adopted for all fish caught, although local taxidermy plus package and freight services are available for trophy specimens.   Flights over Victoria Falls
Experience a birds eye view of the Victoria Falls on a thrilling flight over the Falls and the Zambezi River in a helicopter or Microlight aircraft. The helicopter is designed so all passengers have a good view. The Microlight has an open cockpit for the ultimate ride with the wind in your face. Fifteen-minute flights also go downstream over the Batoka Gorge and upstream over the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, an opportunity to see game in the park below.   Jewish Heritage Tour
In this fascinating walking tour learn about the history of the Jewish community in Zambia, including particular families who were instrumental in the development of the Livingstone town as well as more current civic contributions from Jews in Zambia.
  Local Culture
Makuni Village tour: Chief Makuni invites visitors to his village, home to the Leya people. This is a unique opportunity to see how the local people live in a working village, not one built for tourists. Approximately 6000 people live here and a visit is a fascinating insight into their life style. A member of the village shows visitors around and they can see how traditional huts are built and decorated, take a look inside, meet the residents and see the locals at work.   Water-based activities
There are many different water-based activities offered in the Livingstone area. You can go white water rafting on the Zambezi River below Victoria Falls, and thrill at some of the largest commercially-rafted rapids in the world!
