Arrival San Diego, Calif. / embark MS Zaandam

Days 3-6:
At Sea:

Expert-led discussions may address the history of Pacific discovery, navigational methods and the geological evolution of the Hawaiian Islands.



Day 7:
Hilo, Hawaii:

Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and walk through Thurston Lava Tube, a natural phenomenon created during volcanic eruptions.



Day 8:
Honolulu, Oahu:

Visit the USS Arizona Memorial National Historic Park and the sacred Bishop Museum, dedicated to telling the story of Hawaii and its place in the Pacific.



Day 9:
Lihue, Kauai:

View Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"; and stop at a coffee plantation.



Day 10:
Lahaina, Maui:

Examine Hawaii's marine life at Maui Ocean Center, and visit the sacred Iao Valley.





Days 11-14
At Sea:

Study the sea’s various moods with your own experts in discussions.



Days 15-16
At Sea / Ensenada (Mexico) / San Diego, Calif. / disembark / departure:

Enjoy an opportunity to explore a coastal village before continuing on to port in California.



ms Zaandam

Artifacts and memorabilia from a variety of musical genres decorate the ms Zaandam. In a soaring, three-story atrium at the ship's heart is a Baroque-style Dutch pipe organ, inspired by the traditional barrel organs still found on the streets of the Netherlands. This ocean liner offers spacious public areas and plush accommodations.

S. Reed
Dr. S. Arthur Reed, professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii, has lectured extensively on Hawaiian geology, biology, oceanography and other disciplines. He is coauthor of a biological science and a physical oceanography textbook used in several high schools in Hawaii, on the U. S. mainland and overseas. He has conducted research on coral reef ecology and marine invertebrate biology and since retirement has been a lecturer on more than 70 programs with Road Scholar, the National Parks Conservation Association, and Smithsonian.
 
Gordon Piianaia
Gordon is respected in Hawaii and the South Pacific for his sailing skills as Captain of the famed Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea. Hokulea’s journey was historically significant as its maiden voyage used traditional methods of sailing and navigation; there was no use of modern navigational equipment or instruments. Gordon is a retired naval officer, geography professor at the University of Hawaii, and served as director of the Hawaiian Studies Institute for a private educational institution.

Dorothy Pyle
Dorothy Pyle retired in 2010 as emeritus professor of history from the University of Hawaii Maui Campus. Her greatest interests and specializations have been in studying and teaching about Hawaii and the Pacific. Dorothy has used her storytelling abilities in lectures for Road Scholar on Maui for more than 20 years, as well as for senior citizen groups, farm explorations and judicial conferences. She has traveled widely in the Pacific, and has been the destination speaker twice on study cruises from New Zealand to Hawaii. Dorothy also maintains a long interest in cultural and historic preservation. She served two terms as the Chair of the Maui County Cultural Resources Commission, 10 years as the Historian for the Hawaii Historic Places Review Board, and was a founding member of the grass-roots Alliance for the Heritage of East Maui.

Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Registration between 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Westgate Hotel lobby. Upon arrival, please proceed to the hotel's front desk to check in. You will then be directed to the Road Scholar registration desk. You will be staying at The Westgate Hotel that night.
  End of Program:
Approximately 10:00 am upon disembarkation at San Diego Port, "B" Street Pier with independent departures. You will be staying at MS Zaandam the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Housing & Transportation form and Health & Safety Questionaire.
  Parking availability:
There is 24 hour valet parking (no self) serve for the Westgate Hotel. Overnight parking is $32. Long-term parking is also available at Park & Ride lots that service both the Cruise Ship Terminal and the Airport. Rates vary from $10 to $24 per day.

Travelers headed to and from San Diego International Airport can connect with the Coaster at Amtrak's Santa Fe Depot train station downtown by using Metropolitan Transit System Flyer Route No. 992 every 10 minutes between 5:00 a.m. and 12:50 a.m.The Coaster operates Monday-Saturday. Note: Thurston Lava Tube: Can be wet and slippery, 15 -20 stairs down to the tube and 15- 20 back up. Walking on uneven ground, on and off busses all day. Approx total 1-2 miles walking.

 Morning: Free morning to enjoy shipboard activities and prepare for field trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Group will gather at 11:30 am and disembark ship as soon as the gangplank is down. Depart for Hawaiia Volcanoes National Park on motorcoach.
 Lunch: Deli lunch - Crater Rim Cafe, Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) – KMC is a 50 acre military “R&R” camp located within confines of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was founded in 1916, the same year as the National Park.
 Afternoon: Field Trip: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Your exploration will include guided nature walks and hikes. Stops include: •Jaggar Museum and its overlook into Kilauea Caldera. •The Steam vents. Ground water seeps down to the hot volcanic rocks in this area and returns to the surface as steam. •A walk through a lush rainforest to Nahuku (Thurston) Lava Tube, a natural cave formed by ancient lava flows. •Devastation Trail. The Trail was formed in 1959 as a result of an eruption from the Kilauea Iki crater (Iki is Hawaiian for small). •Kilauea Visitor Center to see exhibits on volcanoes, rainforest, and island formation. Along the way back to the ship, we'll make a brief stop at an orchid nursery that has over 1000 blooming orchids on display - one of the largest collections in Hawaii.

 Afternoon: Field trip to USS Arizona Memorial National Historic Park - view historical film in the theater, board the launch for a ride across Pearl Harbor to the USS Arizona Memorial, explore the museum and book shop.
 Afternoon: Field trip to Bishop Museum. Designated the State Museum of Natural and Cultural History, Bishop Museum is dedicated to telling the story of Hawai`i and its place in the Pacific.
 Dinner: Dinner on board ship or you are free to explore local dining options on your own.
 Evening: Free Evening to explore Oahu or participate in shipboard activities.
 In Transit: All aboard by 9:00 pm. Ship sets sail for Kauai at 11:00 pm.

Day 9: Waimea Canyon/Coffee Plantation/Depart Kauai for Maui
(Saturday, March 16)
   
 Arrive To: Ship arrives at Nawiliwili, Kauai at 8:00 am
 Breakfast: Aboard ship
 Morning: Field Trip: Waimea Canyon - the geologically spectacular "Grand Canyon" of Hawaii - and Kokee State Park. Today we'll study Kauai's natural history, including stops to view Waimea Canyon's incredible erosional valleys from several vantage points. At Kokee State Park, high in the rain forest, we'lll continue natural history studies in lush green surroundings. We'll also visit tiny Kokee Museum to learn about Kauai's native birds, plants and other unique natural resources.
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch at beautiful, peaceful Kokee Park
 Afternoon: After lunch we will depart for the ship and stop at Kaua`i Coffee Company – Hawaii’s largest coffee grower with more than 3400 acres under cultivation. Visit includes a self-guided walking tour of the coffee growing and production process as well as opportunity to sample their different products.

Day 10: Arrive Lahaina/Iao Valley State Park/Maui Ocean Center/Depart Maui for Ensenada, Mexico
(Sunday, March 17)

Note: This is a "tender" port. As Lahaina has a small, shallow port, the ship must anchor off-shore. The group will board tenders (smaller boats) that will transfer them to shore. Assistance is provided by ship staff at boarding time. Iao Valley field trip: scenic drive with interpretation on bus. When you reach the the park, there is an option of climbing 131 stairs to the top or staying at the bottom at the visitor's center or on the bus.
   
 Arrive To: Ship arrives at Lahaina, Maui at 7:00 am.

 Morning: Field Trip: Iao Valley State Park - This lush green valley is a sacred site to the Hawaiian people and is the historic location of a fierce battle between Maui warriors and the army of Kamehameha I.
 Lunch: Seascape Restaurant-Maui Ocean Center
 Afternoon: Field trip to Maui Ocean Center. Maui Ocean Center is an aquarium which is devoted to Hawai`i’s unique marine environment. This state-of-the-art marine park features spectacular live coral displays (the largest collection in the nation), elusive garden eels and majestic lionfish, colorful Hawaiian wrasses, Hawai`i’s beloved green sea turtles, sharks, rays and more.

  Liliuokalani Park Gardens
The Liliuokalani Park and Gardens covers almost 30 acres on the Waiakea Peninsula. This authentic Japanese garden park was built in the early 1900's as a memorial to the Japanese immigrant sugar plantation workers who developed the old Waiakea Sugar Plantation. It is named in honor of Hawaii's last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani who bequeathed part of park land for public use.   Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii Sugar Cane Train

  Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii Kauai Museum
The history of Kauai is kept safe in this great little museum and is worth a stop at before you set out to explore the island. It contains a wealth of historical artifacts and information tracing the island's history from the beginning of time through Contact (when Capt. James Cook "discovered" Kauai in 1778), the monarchy period, the plantation era, and the present.   Kilohana Plantation
This 1930's plantation estate was the home of Gaylord and Ethel Wilcox, descendents of missionary families. Gaylord was the manager of the Grove Farm Plantation. His 16,000 square-foot mansion was loving restored and is open to the public. The motif of the house shows how Kauai's rich and famous lived back when sugar was king of the islands. On premise they have Gaylord's Restaurant, a terrific boutique, a country store, and galleries.   Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the most spectacular natural resources in Hawaii and is dedicated to safeguarding the fragile marine life in the Bay. It is one of the more popular recreational swimming, snorkeling and picnicking areas on O`ahu. The bay itself is legally designated as a State Underwater Park and is the first Marine Life Conservation District in the State. 7455 Kalaniana`ole Highway.   Shop in Waikiki and in the Greater Honolulu Area
Waikiki is a great place to shop and offers prestigious retailers such as Tiffany & Co., Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton as well as more modest stores such as the ever-present ABC Stores and the world-famous International Market Place. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center contains 150 stores and restaurants on four levels. Ala Moana Shopping Center, located in the heart of Honolulu, is one of the largest open-air shopping centers in the world with more than 200 stores to meet your every need. The Center is recognized as having the flagship stores for most major international, national and local retailers. Other nearby malls in Honolulu to shop at include Aloha Tower Marketplace; Ward Warehouse and Ward Center, across from Fisherman’s Wharf; and Kahala Mall in Kahala.
  Waikiki at Night
At night Waikiki is an exuberant world of shops, bistros and neon lights, alive with people, and complete with amusing street entertainers. Often heralded as the ambassadors of aloha, these musicians, singers, mimes, drummers, and a myriad of other performers give Waikiki a local color and ambience found nowhere else in the Hawaiian Islands. Street performers start about 8pm and ends about 10pm.
