Take your watercolor painting to the next level, joining nationally known artist Nancy Ellen Thompson for encouraging instruction in the techniques of watercolor. Whether you are new to the medium or an experienced painter, be assured that you will discover a new — or renewed — passion for watercolor painting in the inspired seaside setting of Ocean City.




Highlights

• Learn techniques of color mixing, glazing, brushwork and general principles of composition.
• With the ever-changing wind and surf as a guide, absorb the subtleties of painting water and sand.
• To cap off an enriching week’s worth of delving into new skills, enjoy an informal Art Show and discussion of participants’ works.

This 2001 “All-American City” best known for its vibrant, turn-of-the-century boardwalk and white-sand beaches is also home to nearby Assateague Island National Seashore, a barrier island rich in wildlife and famous for its wild pony herd.

Nancy Thompson
Nancy has always enjoyed the immediacy and excitement of sketching, journaling and watercolor. Teaching students of all levels for more than 20 years with patience and encouragement, her goal is to help students achieve their own personal style. Her works are in public and private collections worldwide. She has been featured on Maryland Public Television and in Southern Living. Nancy divides her time between her studio in Snow Hill and her home in Solomons, Md.

  DC/Baltimore Metro Area Take Route 50 east over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Stay on Rte. 50 to Baltimore Ave. Go North on Baltimore Ave. to 17th Street.
  From the South Take I-95 north to Rt. 58 east, in Emporia, VA. From Rt. 58 east, follow signs for Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel ($12 toll). Follow Rt. 113 north to Pocomoke City, MD and Rt. 113 north. Take 113 north to Rt. 50 east into Ocean City. Go North on Baltimore Ave to 17th Street.
  Great Lakes Region Take I-70 east to the Baltimore, MD area. From I-70, take the Rt. 695 “Beltway” southeast to the Glen Burnie area, and Rt. 97 south. Take Rt. 97 south to Rt. 50 east (Annapolis and Bay Bridge) Take Rt. 50 east into Ocean City. Go North on Baltimore Ave to 17th Street.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Orientation
(Sunday, October 21)
   
 Afternoon: Upon arrival, check in and pick up your room key. At 4:30 there will be a welcome and introductions in the Key West Room, where you get your schedule for the week.
 Dinner: On-site Coordinator will meet you at 5:30pm for dinner at the Coral Reef Restaurant in the hotel.
 Evening: Program in the evening for instructor to give preview of the week and watercolor demo.

Day 2: Instruction/Painting/Lecture
(Monday, October 22)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Coral Reef Restaurant from 7:30am - 8:30am.
 Morning: Popular artist/instructor Nancy Carver Thompson will explore contrast values of light and dark in a still life painting.
 Lunch: Lunch from 11:30am - 12:30pm.
 Afternoon: Participants will paint with guidance of instructor.
 Dinner: Dinner from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at hotel.
 Evening: Following dinner the artist will lecture on non traditional painting approaches with watercolor.

Day 3: Instruction/Painting

 Breakfast: Breakfast from 7:30am - 8:30am.
 Morning: Instructor will explore contrast colors and focus to build atmospheric perspective in a landscape..
 Lunch: Lunch from 11:30am - 12:30pm.
 Afternoon: Participants will paint with guidance of instructor.
 Dinner: Dinner from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at hotel.
 Evening: Following dinner participants will return to painting selections of instructor..

Day 4: Instruction/Field trip or "Free Time"/Painting
(Wednesday, October 24)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast from 7:30am - 8:30am.
 Morning: Artist will focus on contrast soft and hard edges and lines for expressive paintings.
 Afternoon: Free afternoon for sightseeing, shopping, or painting on your own.
 Dinner: Dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at hotel dining room.
 Evening: Free Time or paint on your own.

Day 5: Painting/Art Show and Discussion
(Thursday, October 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast from 7:30am - 8:30am.
 Morning: Explore with use of contrast detail and glazing in a floral painting.
 Lunch: Lunch from 11:30am - 12:30pm.
 Afternoon: Capture, on paper, the painting techniques explored thoughout the week.
 Dinner: Dinner from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at hotel.
 Evening: To culminate the weeks work, an informal Art Show and Discussion of participants works will be held in the form of an exhibit..
