Program intended for grandchildren from 10 - 15 years of age.

Experience the journey settlers made across the prairie by riding in a wagon to a replica fort and live the pioneer life by cooking over an open fire, learning blacksmithing skills, building a log shelter and more. Meet craftspeople, historians and storytellers who acquaint you with the nature and history of this scenic area, and visit Crazy Horse Memorial, the Indian Museum of North America and Mount Rushmore.




Highlights

• Learn skills early settlers would have known, such as spinning wool, weaving on a loom, making rope and woodworking.
• Celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade, games, campfire singing and bowls of ice cream that you help make.
• Learn about horses during a horseshoeing demonstration and on several trail rides.



Activity Particulars

Walking up to two miles on hilly, uneven terrain; elevations up to 6,000 feet. Hikes optional. Transportation available for those who prefer not to walk.

Conveniently located near major attractions such as Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Monument, and its own Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer is the gateway to the Black Hills region and the area’s historic, cultural and natural sites, including hot springs, ice age fossils and bison.



Accommodations
Simple cabin/bunkhouse room sleeps family of 2-4; lower bunks only. No electricity, lanterns provided. Outhouses/sinks adjacent to cabins, showers within five-minute walk.

Driving Directions
  From Custer, SD Follow Highway 16 & 385 north of Custer for three miles. Turn left at "Heritage Village" onto Medicine Mountain Road. Go about 3/4 mile, then veer left at the fork onto Custer-Limestone Road. Continue on this road about 3 miles and watch for Atlantic Mountain Ranch on the right. NOTE: Do not depend on Google Maps or Map Quest or a GPS unit to find your way to Atlantic Mountain Ranch. Most folks who do so, end up in the wrong place.
  From Rapid City, SD Follow Highways 16 & 385 through Hill City south to the Crazy Horse Monument. Just 1 mile past Crazy Horse, at "Heritage Village," watch for sign "Atlantic Mountain Ranch" on the right. Turn right (west) onto Medicine Mountain Road and go about 3/4 mile, then veer left at the fork onto Custer-Limestone Road. Continue on this road about 3 miles and watch for Atlantic Mountain Ranch on the right. NOTE: Do not depend on Google Maps or Map Quest or a GPS unit to find your way to Atlantic Mountain Ranch. Most folks who do so, end up in the wrong place.
Elevation Note: Atlantic Mountain Ranch is located at 6,000 feet.

Equipment Requirements: Sleeping bag, hiking/walking shoes. (Sleeping bag can be borrowed from the camp for those flying to the program.)

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Register and settle-in. Orientation to the week and to horse rides. Evening program and campfire.
(Sunday, July 1)
   
 Arrive To: Check in between 3 and 4 PM.
 Dinner: All meals at Atlantic Mountain Ranch.
 Evening: Orientation to the camp and to the week. Get acquainted with our horseback riding procedure. Evening program on wagon travel. Singing around the campfire to end the day.

Day 2: Observe a horse being shod. Try out blacksmithing. Ride in a covered wagon. Make a 3-legged stool, do leather stamping, and make wooden toys. Take a scenic drive through the Needles Highway and visit Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Cook meals on a fire.
(Monday, July 2)
   
 Breakfast: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Morning: Learn more about horses and their care as you observe a horse shoeing demonstration. Try your hand with a hammer and anvil as you make a small item to take home with you.
 Lunch: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Afternoon: Experience first-hand how rough traveling in a covered wagon would have been for the pioneers. Using hand tools, learn to make a 3-legged stool and old-time wooden toys, and try your hand at leather stamping.
 Dinner: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Evening: Take a drive through the scenic Needles Highway in Custer State Park and get out and explore the "needle." Visit Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and stay for the evening ranger and lighting program.

Day 3: Use hand tools and equipment to help construct a log cabin and make sausage. Horseback trail ride. Visit Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian Museum of North America. Evening concert and campfire. Sleep overnight in a tipi. Help cook meals on the fire.
(Tuesday, July 3)
   
 Breakfast: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Morning: Use hand tools to saw and peel logs and help to build a log cabin. Try your hand at making the perfect sausage link.
 Lunch: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Afternoon: Horseback trail ride. Visit Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian Museum of North America.
 Dinner: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Evening: Concert by a regional folk musician. Songs and stories around the campfire. Youth can sleep overnight at the tipis (optional).

Day 4: Pioneer crafts: spinning and weaving. Horseback trail ride. Pioneer 4th of July Celebration. Evening campfire. Help cook meals on the fire.
(Wednesday, July 4)
   
 Breakfast: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Morning: Spinning and weaving. Try your hand spinning wool on a spinning wheel and weaving on a small and large loom. Making butter.
 Lunch: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Afternoon: Making rope and dipping candles by hand. Horseback trail ride. Hand crank home-made ice cream.
 Dinner: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Evening: Pioneer 4th of July Celebration. Dress up for a parade. Play relay and family games. Eat home-made ice cream. Sing around the campfire.

Day 5: Living history visit from a mountain man. Ride a wagon through the woods, enjoy a picnic lunch, and pan for garnets in the creek. Horse trail ride. Listen to a Black Hills storyteller. Take a drive to observe wildlife. Help cook meals on the fire.
(Thursday, July 5)
   
 Breakfast: Take turns helping to cook the meal on the fire.
 Morning: Mountain man program, with a visitor from the past, and lots of items to observe and touch.
 Lunch: Take a wagon ride and/or hike through the forest to a scenic meadow for a picnic lunch. Pan for garnets in the creek upstream from where gold was first discovered in the Black Hills.
 Afternoon: Horseback trail ride. Relax and listen to an expert Black Hills storyteller.
 Dinner: At Atlantic Mountain Ranch dining hall.
 Evening: Observe local wildlife on a scenic drive through Custer State Park. Learn more history of the first settlers in the area as you walk through the first stockade built in the Black Hills.
