Enjoy a true behind-the-scenes of Folkmoot USA, an international folk festival steeped in tradition and dedicated to the celebrating the cultures of countries around the world through music and dance. Folkmoot (an Old English word meaning “meeting of the people”) has featured performers from more than 100 countries since its inception in 1984! Attend performances, participate in a workshop with one of the groups and even learn a folk dance.




Highlights

• Enjoy two performances by renowned dance groups and meet some dancers in the facility where they eat, sleep and practice.
• Study Folkmoot’s history and learn about the planning of the festival with its more than 350 performers from all corners of the globe.
• Explore historic Waynesville, a lovely town nestled between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Lake Junaluska

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the ridgelines of Haywood County, offering visitors to Lake Junaluska a beautiful view of the Southern Appalachians Mountains. Asheville and the famous Biltmore Estate are a short drive away.

Flora Gammon
Teacher,singer and instrumentalist, Flora is an interpreter of Scottish and Appalachian traditional folk music. She serves as Music Director for the Grandfather Highland Games and is a Director on the Folkmoot USA Board. Flora, who graduated from East Carolina University, was named Celtic Woman of the Year in 2008 for her efforts to share her Scottish heritage. She enlivens history with song as a visiting artist in schools and as an Road Scholar instructor.
 
Marilyn McCredie
Born in the Hooper's Creek section of Henderson County, North Carolina, into a family that has held land there since land grant days, Marilyn McCredie grew up steeped in Appalachian folkways and tradition. This, plus her own rich experience, is the basis for most of her storytelling. She is a debunker of myths and a dispeller of stereotypes regarding mountain people. Her depth of knowledge and her skillful presentation have led her to be called “a cultural ambassador.”

Registration from 3:00-4:30pm in Terrace Hotel lobby. You will be staying at Terrace Hotel that night.
  End of Program:
Wrap-up session after breakfast from 8:30 - 9:30. Class is dismissed at 9:30 am. You will be staying at Terrace Hotel the night before.

The nearest Greyhound Bus Terminal is in Asheville, NC. Transportation from the bus terminal to Lake Junaluska must be arranged by the participant. The Intentional Growth Center is happy to help. Just give us a call Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon Eastern Time for a list of providers.
 
Driving Directions
  From the East (Asheville) I-40 West to Exit 27 (Hwy. 19, 23, 74) 25 miles; follow Hwy. 19 South 4.1 miles to Exit 103; continue on Hwy 19 South 1 mile to second entrance through stone gate on right to Lake Junaluska Assembly. Turn right on N.Lakeshore Drive; at next intersection, turn right and continue on N.Lakeshore Drive to: Terrace Hotel (on the left) .5 mile. To Lambuth Inn, continue on Lakeshore Drive up the hill to the cross and take a sharp left.
  From the North on I-81 After entering the state of Tennessee, continue to Exit 57, exit onto US-23 and/or I-26 south to Johnson City. Follow US-23/I-26 into North Carolina, into Asheville. Take right ramp onto I-240 towards US-74A/I-26/I-40 W. Follow I-240 to Exit 1A, take ramp onto I-40 W towards Canton/Knoxville, then follow directions form Asheville (above).
  From the South (Atlanta) I-85 North to I-985 to Hwy 23 North to Waynesville, NC (187 miles). At Exit 102B take Hwy 276 North 1.3 miles to junction of Hwy 19 South. Turn right on Hwy 19. Drive a short distance to Lake Junaluska Assembly entrance which will be on your left. Turn left on N Lakeshore Drive and at the next intersection, turn right and continue on Lakeshore Drive to Terrace Hotel (on the left) .5 mile. To Lambuth Inn, continue on Lakeshore Drive up the hill to the cross and take a sharp left.
  From the West (Knoxville) I-40 East to Exit 20 (90 miles; take Hwy 276 to Hwy 19 North (5.8 miles). Turn left on Hwy 19North and continue 3 miles to Lake Junaluska Assembly entrance. Turn left on N.Lakeshore Drive; at next intersection turn right and continue on Lakeshore Drive to Terrace Hotel (on the left) .5 mile. To Lambuth Inn, continue on Lakeshore Drive up the hill to the cross and take a sharp left.

Day 1: Registration, Check In. Sunday performance in the afternoon. Orientation in the evening.

 Afternoon: Check-In at theTerrace Hotel from 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Folkmoot World Friendship Sunday performance in Stuart Auditorium across from the Terrace Hotel at 3:00 pm. Visit www.folkmootusa.org to see the 2012 lineup of performers!
 Dinner: Dinner in Hotel dinning room overlooking the lake. All meals served buffet style.
 Evening: Orientation session following dinner in the Terrace Hotel classroom.

Day 2: History of Folkmoot. Explore Festival. Evening entertainment
(Monday, July 23)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room
 Morning: Class on the History of Folkmoot (how it got started) and what is involved in planning event (guides, volunteer assignment, arranging performances throughout the area); documentary film on Folkmoot.
 Lunch: Buffet lunch in hotel dining room
 Afternoon: Tour Lake Junaluska grounds by boat or trolley, depending on the weather.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room
 Evening: Scottish Dance with the Highlands Scottish Dancers and interactive session on folklore in the mountains with a regional storyteller.

Day 3: Dance Workshop. Explore historic main street Waynesville. Free time. Folkmoot Performance
(Tuesday, July 24)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room
 Morning: Travel to Folkmoot Center; workshops with one of the international dance groups.
 Lunch: Lunch with the dancers at Folkmoot Center
 Afternoon: Leave Folkmoot Center for optional excursion to historic main street in Waynesville; return to hotel for free time.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room
 Evening: Entertainment/Performance. See Monday description. Travel to historic Colonial Theater in Canton to see performances by scheduled international dance groups.
