Corbin

A tiny town in southeastern Kentucky that grew up around the railroads, Corbin was home to Colonel Sanders who started his fried chicken business out of a local service station. Cumberland Falls State Park is 20 minutes south of the town and is known for the moonbows over its waterfalls, a relatively faint version of a rainbow only seen at night.

  Description: Cumberland Falls State Resort is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Known as the "Niagara of the South," the waterfall forms a 125-foot wide curtain that plunges 60 feet into the boulder-strewn gorge below. The mist of Cumberland Falls creates the magic of the moonbow, only visible on a clear night during a full moon. This unique phenomenon appears nowhere else in the Western Hemisphere.

Afternoon registration at 5:00 PM. You will be staying at DuPont Lodge that night.

Program ends after lunch at 12:00 PM. You will be staying at DuPont Lodge the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Completed health form returned to Program Coordinator prior to arrival. Valid photo ID such as driver's license.

A special complimentary Shuttle Service provided by Cumberland Falls State Resort Park from Bluegrass Field on program start date. Pick-up will be at Airport exit at 3:00 p.m. sharp. Due to Airport Security, participants must be ready to board shuttle at 3:00 p.m. Return to Bluegrass Field by 3:00 p.m. on program end date. Due to site location's isolation, a rental car is highly recommended!

  East (Cumberland Gap, TN) Travel west on 25E to I-75 at Corbin. Turn left on I-75 South, exit 25, turn right on 25w. Travel 8 miles then right on Highway 90 west. Travel 8 miles, Dupont Lodge on left.
  North I -75 South, exit 25, turn right onto 25w, travel 8 miles, then right on highway 90, travel 8 miles, Dupont Lodge on left.
  South I-75 North, exit 15, turn left onto 25w, travel 8 miles then left on highway 90, travel 8 miles, Dupont Lodge on left.
  West (Bowling Green, KY) Take Louie B. Nunn Parkway to Somerset turn right on US27 south approx 20 miles travel south then left on Highway 90 east travel 12 miles, Dupont Lodge on right.

Day 1: Arrival and Check In/Welcome and Orientation

 Afternoon: 5:00 PM Check-in and registration.
 Dinner: 5:30 PM Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: 7:00 PM Welcome, orientation, and program overview. Meet your fellow participants and program staff.

Day 2: Nature History of the Cumberland Falls Area/Appalachian Geography
(Monday, November 12)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: After Breakfast, discover the unique geology of the park with classroom instruction and a trip to Cumberland Falls.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Explore Appalachian geography with historical emphasis through classroom instruction/discussion.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Craft emonstrations/lectures by local artisans.

Day 3: Music and Life in the Appalachians/Birds of Prey
(Tuesday, November 13)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Music of Appalachia with respect to history and local traditions.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Role of Religion in Appalachia presented with respect to the musical traditions of both mainstream and unique mountain denominations.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Learn about the nighttime birds of prey and have a chance at an up close encounter with a wild bird of prey.

Day 4: Natural Beauty of Kentucky/Coal Camps/
(Wednesday, November 14)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Field trip to Natural points of interest.
 Lunch: Enjoy a box lunch while visiting former Company owned coal camps.
 Afternoon: Visit coal camps.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Time on your own to enjoy the park or venture out into the local community.

Day 5: Nature Walk/Socio economics of region/Farewell Party
(Thursday, November 15)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities. Socio-economic look at Appalachia with emphasis on minority populations.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Guided 1.5 mile nature hike focusing on the flora and fauna of the park.
 Dinner: Dinner followed by Kentucky Chatauqua performance.
 Evening: Overview of week, passports stamped. Desserts.

Day 6: Program Wrap Up/Departure

 Morning: Guided nature hike and program wrap-up
