Experience Wisconsin’s extraordinary architecture, from Frank Lloyd Wright’s world-famous Taliesin Estate in Spring Green to the pristinely preserved Ten Chimneys estate of Broadway couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Explore the galleries and collections of the fantastical Milwaukee Art Museum and examine the restored rotunda at the architecturally significant Wisconsin State Capitol.

Lake Geneva

One hour southwest of Milwaukee, Lake Geneva is a resort city whose popularity arose from its accessibility from Chicago via the railroad. With its many large summer homes, the city has been called "The Newport of the West," and it remains a year round destination for those seeking a quaint, lakeside getaway.

Jim Slauson

As the head of the Art History Department at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD), Jim Slauson has shared his enthusiasm for art history and the humanities for more than 20 years. He has traveled and lectured extensively in Europe and the Mediterranean, and has published numerous articles on Mediterranean art and culture. Jim has a M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with additional study at the University of Minnesota.
 
Trevor Stephenson

Trevor Stephenson began piano studies at age 10 and, at age 12, decided on a life in music. Following two undergraduate degrees in piano performance, he earned a doctorate of musical arts degree in historical performance of 18th-century music from Cornell University. In 1990 in Madison, Wis., he began rebuilding and customizing a series of keyboard instruments. Trevor founded the Light & Shadow concert and recording company in 1994, and has released 12 recordings. He is artistic director of the Madison Bach Musicians.

Driving Directions
  Milwaukee Take I-43 South to the East Troy, Highway 120 exit. Drive South on Highway 120, 13 miles to Lake Geneva. Continue straight into Lake Geneva (don't turn left on Hwy 120) the road changes name several times from Interchange to Williams to Broad. Continue to 2nd stop light in Lake Geneva. Turn right (west) onto Highway 50 and proceed one mile to the Covenant Harbor entrance which will be on your left. Follow the drive and turn right at Heinzleman Way to the parking lot for Geneva Bay Centre.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival and Orientation
(Monday, August 6)
   
 Afternoon: Plan to arrive at the Geneva Bay Centre at Covenant Harbor around 4:00 PM for check-in. Sorry, no early check-ins.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: After dinner the group will gather with the Group Leader for an ORIENTATION to the conference center, a review of the program schedule, and introductions.

Day 2: Taliesin in Spring Green
(Tuesday, August 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Board our motor coach for our FIELD TRIP to Madison. Approximate travel time 1 hour 30 minutes. We'll make a comfort stop in Madison at the Wisconsin State Capitol. You may choose to go up to the observation level for a birds eye view of the city. You'll also be able to see the exterior of the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired Monona Terrace. We'll reboard the motor coach and continue west toward Spring Green.
 Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant in historic Mazomanie.
 Afternoon: Reboard the motor coach after lunch and continue FIELD TRIP to Spring Green. Approximate travel time 20 minutes. Our first stop for our visit of FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S TALIESIN will be the visitor center where we'll meet our docents and board our shuttles for a quick ride over to the estate. Enjoy a two hour docent led exploration of the main house. You'll hear stories of Mr. Wright's family life, his architectural innovations, and his love of the surrounding countryside. Taliesin was always a work in progress, Mr. Wright worked on it for 48 years. You're sure to find a favorite room, piece of furniture, or other object. Afterward return to Lake Geneva. Approximate travel time 2 hours.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Evening entertainment.

Day 3: Milwaukee Art Museum
(Wednesday, August 8)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Board our motor coach for our FIELD TRIP to Milwaukee. Travel time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. We'll meet our docents at the MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM on the shore of Lake Michigan for a 1 hour ARCHITECTURE TALK about the history of the museum including buildings designed by Eero Saarinen, David Kahler and of course SANTIAGO CALATRAVA. There is so much to see in this treasure of a museum. Learn how they moved the ribs for the "wings" through downtown Milwaukee, feel the smooth texture of the poured concrete walls and don't forget to go see the parking garage - it's worth a visit.
 Lunch: Enjoy a box lunch consisting of a sandwich, chips, soda or water, fruit cup and a cookie. We'll eat right in the museum with views of the collection and lake. At noon you'll want to temporarily leave your lunch and head to the pedestrian walkway to watch the "wings" close and open. The whole process takes about 10 minutes. Take your camera!
 Afternoon: After lunch you'll have some time for INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION of the museum. Take some time to explore the Bradley Collection donated to the museum by Mrs. Peg Bradley. She donated her collection and the money to build a building to house it. Afternoon motor coach return to Lake Geneva.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Evening entertainment.

Day 4: Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot
(Thursday, August 9)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room. Check-out of rooms prior to boarding motor coach. Luggage can be left at the front desk for safekeeping.
 Morning: After breakfast we'll board our motor coach for our FIELD TRIP to the small community of Genesee Depot. Travel time is approximately 1 hour. This is where Broadway actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne built their home, TEN CHIMNEYS. Yes, there are actually ten chimneys. You'll hear this story and more during a two hour docent-led exploration of the house and estate. The home contains all the original furnishings and you'll feel like the Lunts have just stepped out.
 Lunch: Enjoy a box lunch in the Ten Chimneys Program Center. After lunch you'll have some time for INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION of the wonderful exhibits in the Visitor Center and learn even more about the Lunts. Thank you for visiting Darling!
 Afternoon: Reboard motor coach for return to Lake Geneva. Approximate return at 2:30 PM. Independent departures.
