Discover “The Gentle Island,” Canada’s smallest and greenest province. Experience the island way of life exploring harbor towns, charming fishing villages, quaint farms and the historic city of Charlottetown. Meet with locals who have been inspired by the Island’s beauty, mystique and fascinating history. Learn how chefs prepare feasts from the bounty of land and sea. Visit local haunts — studios to fisheries and museums — and learn about rum-runners, lighthouse keepers, basket weavers, organic farmers, lobster fishermen, gardeners and oyster shuckers. Join in the fun at a festive PEI “ceilidh.”

Stanley Bridge

Located at the junction of the Stanley River and New London Bay southwest of Cavendish, the historic village of Stanley Bridge was a bustling point of commerce in the 19th century for farmers who brought their goods to the coastal wharves. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery visited this quaint community as a child growing up nearby.

January 2008 a valid passport or original birth certificate along with a valid driver’s license or a state issued photo ID card will be required for land and sea border crossings to and from Canada. Driving Directions
	Charlottetown, PE	Take Rte. 2 west to Hunter River. Turn right on Rte. 13 (Irving station at the bottom of the hill) towards Cavendish. Turn west (left) on Rte. 224 in New Glasgow. Continue through the stop sign in Stanley Bridge and across the wharf. The Stanley Bridge Resort is on the right just up the hill from the wharf. (Look for the red roofs.)
	Confederation Bridge	Take the Trans Canada Highway (Rte. 1) until it intersects with 1A. Take 1A towards Summerside. Follow 1A to Rte. 2. Take Rte. 2 east toward Kensington. When you come to the traffic light in Kensington, continue straight through the light (past the Petro Can gas station) which then becomes Rte. 6 through Margate, Clinton, and New London to Stanley Bridge. The Stanley Bridge Country Resort will be on your left, overlooking the harbour. (Look for the red roofs.)
	Wood Island Ferry Terminal	Car/Passenger ferry that travels from Nova Scotia to PEI (14 miles/75 minutes). Take the Trans Canada Highway, 1A, to Charlottetown, then Take Rte. 2 west to Hunter River. Turn right on Rte. 13 (Irving station at the bottom of the hill) towards Cavendish. Turn west (left) on Rte. 224 in New Glasgow. Continue through the stop sign in Stanley Bridge and across the wharf. The Stanley Bridge Resort is on the right just up the hill from the wharf. (Look for the red roofs.)

Dinner:	There are two restaurants on site that provide lovely meals, or you may choose to eat on your own prior to arriving at Stanley Bridge Country Resort.
Evening:	Orientation for your Road Scholar program begins at 7:00 pm in one of the meeting rooms at the Stanley Bridge Country Resort

Day 2:

Introduction to Prince Edward Island History/Green Gables/Community Ceilidh
(Monday, October 1)

Breakfast:	Breakfast included.
Morning:	An introduction to Prince Edward Island history will be given by a local historian, always an Road Scholar favorite presenter! Then you will travel a short distance into Cavendish, or "Avonlea" from the novel Anne of Green Gables. No trip to Prince Edward Island is complete without a visit to Green Gables National Historic Site. This site is administered by Parks Canada and your visit will be with one of their excellent interpretive staff members. You will learn all about Lucy Maud Montgomery and the book, Anne of Green Gables, which launched her writing career and introduced many people world-wide to Prince Edward Island.
Lunch:	Share a wonderful meal prepared by a Culinary Institute trained chef using local and organic ingredients.
Afternoon:	You will get to find out about the famous Yankee Gale while visiting a hidden seaside cemetery overlooking New London Lighthouse and the Cavendish Sandspit. This is always a wonderful spot for taking photos and walking on the beach.
Dinner:	Enjoy dinner in a charming inn located in the town of Kensington.
Evening:	The group will attend a community ceilidh in the town of Kensington (traditional music, dance, humor)

Day 3:

Charlottetown walking tour, architecture and unique stories/Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead for lunch/Wood Islands Lighthouse/Winery tour and tasting/Photography presentation
(Tuesday, October 2)

Breakfast:	Breakfast included.
Morning:	Travel to the capitol city of Charlottetown to enjoy a guided walking tour of the waterfront area. Visit Beaconsfield to view the incredible architecture, interior decorating and gardens of this historic gem and to learn about how the wealthy merchant who built it went "bust".
Lunch:	Travel to the community of Orwell to the Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead. There you will enjoy a lunch in the homestead dining room prepared using local, organic products. You'll also learn the significance of Sir Andrew MacPhail to PEI and how much this Island meant to this very accomplished man.
Afternoon:	Learn all about local ecology and how an experimental nursery and gardens help facilitate the reintroduction of native species to Prince Edward Island. In addition, take a guided walk to learn about native birds and wildlive and their adaptation to local environments. The rest of the afternoon will be spent along the Northumberland Strait. You will visit the Wood Islands Lighthouse to learn all about the life of a lighthouse keeper, rum running and the Phantom Ship. You'll also see where the ferry arrives several times each day from Nova Scotia and take some scenic backroads to view some Island vistas.
Dinner:	Dinner will be served at the Stanley Bridge Country Resort.
Evening:	A local photographer will share his insights into how to capture the natural beauty of Prince Edward Island. He will give tips and tricks that you can use for taking photos on PEI and wherever else you may travel and he will share many of his own photos. This session is for all levels of photography and for all those who enjoy viewing beautiful photos.

Day 4:

Learn from the experts about lobster, mussels, oysters and organic farming. Visit the Yankee Gale Cemetery, New London Lighthouse and enjoy a fabulous dinner prepared by a Culinary Institute chef.
(Wednesday, October 3)

Breakfast:	Breakfast included.
Morning:	During a visit to a local fishery, you will learn all there is to know about lobster fishing and the "cultivation" of mussels. This presenter consistently ranks as the number one presenter for all Northshore Institute programs. You'll also visit an organic farm to learn from a wonderful presenter all about organic farming and sustainable agriculture on Prince Edward Island.
Lunch:	Experience the fun and skill shown by a 3-time Canadian oyster-shucking champion.Then enjoy Malpeque oysters followed by a wonderful lunch in the charming seaside community of Malpeque.
Afternoon:	Visit a small museum to enjoy an engaging presentation by an oyster fisher. The museum also showcases some wonderful artifacts and unique stories about the Malpeque Bay area. Take a scenic drive back to the Stanley Bridge Country Resort where you will then enjoy 2 1/2 hours of free time.
Dinner:	Enjoy the culinary marvels of chef Diana Linder at Maplethorpe Inn. She is a Culinary Institute-trained chef and is known for her use of local, organic meats, produce and fruits in her creations and for her humor and hospitality.
Evening:	Free evening. Optional activity suggestions given by the group leader

Day 5:

Stories and Songs and humor showcase the lives and culture of Prince Edward Islanders/enjoy a spinning and weaving demonstration and talk/chef-prepared Acadian lunch/Free afternoon and evening (dinner provided).
(Thursday, October 4)

Breakfast:	Breakfast included.
Morning:	Through song and stories, your presenter will share an interesting and humorous look at Prince Edward Islanders. This is always such an enjoyable time for the group and everyone comes away with a better insight into the character of Island people and the fabric that holds them together. Then two women who are expert spinners and weavers do a very popular presentation. They share many stories along with their craft and engage the group in discussion and in hands-on activities.
Lunch:	The resort chef will prepare (and discuss) a traditional Acadian meal for lunch. Acadians (Maritime French people) comprise about 20% of the Island's population.
Afternoon:	The afternoon is left free for independent activities. The resort has an on-site pool and hot tub and a wonderful art and craft store. The Stanley Bridge wharf is only 1/4 of a mile from the resort where you may take a deep-sea fishing cruise, shop for antiques or enjoy sitting on the deck of the oyster bar. Private transportation or taxi will be needed for any other explorations. Suggestions for optional activities will be given by the group leader (e.g., golf, craft boutiques, museums, beaches, entertainment).
Dinner:	Dinner is on your own for this evening. There are two restaurants on site at the resort and another restaurant within walking distance, for those who choose to stay on-site.

Day 6:

Fox farming/tour of Summerside/visit to Bottle Houses/ basket weaving/Lobster Supper
(Friday, October 5)

Breakfast:	Breakfast at Stanley Bridge Resort
Morning:	Travel to Summerside for a guided exploration of PEI's western city. Learn all about the incredible wealth that was generated on PEI as a result of fox farming and view the beautiful architecture of the famous "fox houses", mansions built with money from raising and selling foxes. Re-live the famous Summerside fire and discover the historic connections of this city to the United States.
Lunch:	Lunch prepared by a local chef at a cooking school on the second floor of a supermarket!
Afternoon:	The fist stop of the afternoon is in the Evangeline region of the Island for a visit to some unique creations known as"The Bottle Houses". The site also has gorgeous gardens to explore. Then you'll travel "up west" to a fabulous facility dedicated to Prince Edward Island basket-making. Witness a demonstration in various basket-making styles and learn about the uses of the various baskets.
Dinner:	Enjoy a traditional PEI lobster supper as the last group event of your Road Scholar program.
