Santa Fe

A cosmopolitan city famous for its world-renowned opera, chamber and choral music and for its art and artists, Santa Fe is situated at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Nearby, eight historic, continuously occupied pueblos and small Hispanic villages divulge a heritage that is impeccably preserved in this multi-cultural state capital.



Taos

Home to Pueblo Indians long before Spanish missionaries established an outpost in 1617, by the early 1800s, Taos was the largest fur trading center in the West. Native American traditions and the natural beauty of surrounding mountains abound in this vibrant, northern New Mexico community favored by artists since the late 1800s.



Albuquerque

New Mexico's vast history, diversity, creativity, cuisine, beauty and art unite in this vibrant city, founded as a Spanish colonial outpost in 1706 and built in a traditional Spanish village configuration in which civic buildings surround a central plaza. “Old Town” is just one of New Mexico’s largest city’s many gems.

Ronald Roybal
Ronald Roybal is a professional musician who performs in the New Mexico area. A descendant of Spanish Colonial and Pueblo (Tewa) peoples, he has been nominated for four Native American Music Awards for his flute and Spanish guitar recordings. Ronald has been featured twice on NPR’s “Performance Today” program and has performed live at concert venues such as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Colorado Music Festival. He holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and psychology.
 
Thomas Gallegos
Tom Gallegos is a native of Taos who works to promote the culture of northern New Mexico communities and pueblos. He has been involved with Road Scholar’s learning adventures since 1986. Tom’s volunteer activities include restoration of the Santa Fe River and preservation of the Barrio Analco neighborhood of Santa Fe. He is an adjunct instructor with the New Mexico Highlands University and holds master’s degrees from Arizona State University and the University of Kansas.

Driving Directions
  Albuquerque Sunport and I-25 to Nativo Lodge From the Airport, head West on Sunport Blvd SE. Follow the signs for I-25 Downtown and Santa Fe and merge onto I-25 North via the ramp. Go 7 miles north and take Exit #230 at Osuna Road and San Mateo Blvd. At the bottom of the exit ramp (on Pan American Freeway) turn right (South) onto San Mateo Blvd., and get immediately into the left hand lane. Turn left onto Pan American Freeway and the hotel is on your right just past Starbuck's. Parking is available at no charge
  From I-40 East or West to Nativo Lodge Take the I-25 North Exit and go approximately 3 miles. Day 1: Arrive in Albuquerque/Orientation and Introductions
(Sunday, June 24)
   
 Arrive To: Hotel check-in any time after 3:00 PM. Register with your program's Group Leader in hotel designated area between 4:00 and 5:30 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner in the hotel dining room from 6:00 - 7:00 PM.
 Evening: Program orientation and introductions in hotel meeting room from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Day 2: Walking and driving exploration of Santa Fe/Presentation by Native American award-winning musician
(Monday, June 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.
 Morning: From 8:30 until 11:00 AM, you'll have a class in a hotel meeting room about the history of New Mexico. Have luggage to bus for loading no later than 11:15 AM.
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 11:30 - 12:30 PM.
 Afternoon: Bus departs for Santa Fe at 12:30 PM. Upon arrival, there will be a driving and walking exploration of Santa Fe that includes many famous sites.

You'll see the historic Plaza area, St. Francis Cathedral, (the seat of the Archdiocese of New Mexico), a remarkably beautiful building. You will also visit the New Mexico State Capitol building and see some of its famous art collection.

Bus takes you to hotel at 4:30 PM for check-in.

 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00 - 7:00 PM.
 Evening: Lecture and performance from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, where you'll hear music of the southwest, taught by Native American professional musician and scholar, Ronald Roybal. Ron is an award-winning musician dedicated to the preservation of traditional Native American music as well as being a composer of some of his own. He's a fine singer, guitarist and Native American flute player, and your evening with him will be unlike any other evening of your life! He's a delightful presenter in every way.

Day 3: Museum of International Folk Art/Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and other state museum visits/Dinner on your own and free evening
(Tuesday, June 26)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 to 8:00 AM
 Morning: From 8:30 - 9:30 AM, hear a lecture about the history Santa Fe in hotel meeting room before departing for a visit to the Museum of International Folk Art and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture at 9:45 AM, both part of the State of New Mexico Museums system. The MIAC offers a huge collection of pottery, basketry, rugs, jewelry and artifacts, mostly from tribes of the southwest region. The exhibits are beautifully displayed and documented. The Museum of International Folk Art features the huge collection of folk art of Alexander Girard. Displayed in charming scenarios, you'll be fascinated by this delightful museum. Both museums have great gift shops as well!
 Lunch: Lunch from 11:30 - 12:30 at Museum Hill Cafe.
 Afternoon: Continue with museum visits until 1:45 PM, when the bus will take you to downtown to visit the Palace of the Governors, New Mexico Museum of Art and the New Mexico History Museum. You'll receive passes to visit these State of New Mexico museums as you choose, or you may have some free time in the downtown plaza area.

Bus returns to the hotel at 5:00 PM, or you may stay downtown for dinner on your own. You can get back to the hotel via taxi or city bus (schedules at front desk at hotel).

 Dinner: Dinner on your own tonight. You may return to the hotel and dine at a restaurant close by if you wish, or remain in the downtown area where there are many fine restaurants.

Your group leader will have some suggestions for you, if you'd like restaurant recommendations. Return to the hotel after dinner on your own, via cab or city bus.

 Evening: Free evening for more time in Santa Fe or rest and relaxation.

Day 4: Pecos National Historical Park/Santa Clara Pueblo/St. Francis de Asis Church
(Wednesday, June 27)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room at 7:00 - 8:00 AM, with checkout following.
 Morning: Bus departs at 8:30 AM for a field trip to Pecos National Historical Park, an example of late Anasazi pueblo ruins and Spanish colonization. The site, on ranch land (the Forked Lightning Ranch) owned by the late Greer Garson and her husband, Buddy Fogelson, was donated with the hope that the monument would be preserved for visitors. The museum/visitors' center features a film narrated by Ms. Garson. A mile-long, paved hiking trail circles the site which has remains of pueblo dwellings, kivas and a mission church, all located on remarkably beautiful land in the Pecos valley 30 miles northeast of Santa Fe.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant near Pecos National Historical Park.
 Afternoon: Bus departs for Santa Clara Pueblo at 12:00 PM for a visit with Paul Speckled Rock at his pottery shop at 1:30 PM. Santa Clara is one of the most popular pueblos for visitors. Its tribal members are among the most artistically active of all the pueblos, and fine works by Santa Clara artists can be found in a large number of shops and studios in the village. Santa Clara ancestors most likely migrated south from the Four Corners region, eventually reaching the Pajarito Plateau on the eastern slope of the Jemez Mountains between A.D. 1100 and 1300. Today, Santa Clara is home to about 2600 people. The tribe's 47,000 acres still supports some farming. A small casino and bowling center in Espanola should help fund additional tribal endeavors.

Continue on to Ranchos de Taos and St. Francis de Asis Church, one of the most photographed churches in New Mexico. Bus travels to hotel for check-in.

 Dinner: Dinner in the hotel dining area.
 Evening: Instructor will offer a lecture from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Day 5: Rio Grande Gorge Bridge/Millicent Rogers Museum/Martinez Hacienda/Blumenschein Home/Taos Pueblo (if open)/Trading Post Cafe
(Thursday, June 28)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 - 8:00 AM.
 Morning: Bus departs at 9:00 AM for visits to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and the Millicent Rogers Museum. Locally known as the "High Bridge," the bridge is a cantilever truss bridge across the Rio Grande Gorge 10 miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico. At 650 feet above the Rio Grande, it is the fifth highest bridge in the United States. A visit to the Millicent Rogers Museum follows (10 AM).
 Lunch: Lunch at Antonio's Restaurant from 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
 Afternoon: Bus departs for field trip to the Ernest Blumenschein Home (1:00 PM). This was the home of painter Ernest L. Blumenschein, a co-founder of the Taos Art Colony and one of the "Famous Seven." It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Then you'll visit the Martinez Hacienda (2:00 PM), an example of a Spanish/Mexican Hacienda, with many outbuildings, all representing the Spanish Colonial era.

Bus departs for a trip to Taos Pueblo (3:00 PM) (if it's open to visitors--it's closed once in awhile for funerals, special pueblo meetings, etc. and we don't ever know in advance) OR, if the pueblo is closed, for free time at the Taos Plaza.

Bus returns to the hotel at 4:30 PM. Return to hotel shortly before 4:45 PM.

 Dinner: Bus departs at 5:45 PM for dinner at the Trading Post Cafe from 6:00 - 7:30 PM, then returns to the hotel.
 Evening: Free evening for rest and relaxation.

Day 6: Chimayó visit/Albuquerque/Indian Pueblo Cultural Center/Old Town
(Friday, June 29)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room from 7:00 - 8:00 AM, hotel check-out. Have luggage to bus by 8:00 AM, please!
 Morning: Bus departs to the northern New Mexico village of Chimayó at 8:30 am, following the High Road.

The bus will travel on to Chimayó. This Hispanic village is much as it has been over the last two hundred years. Stop to visit the Santuario de Chimayó, famous for the healing earth found inside. The Santuario also offers some remarkable folk art, from its beautiful retablos, stations of the cross, and bultos (statues of the saints). This little church is a very special one with a fascinating history; it's a great example of the simple faith of northern New Mexicans.

You'll visit one of the shops in Chimayó to see some examples of the beautiful weavings, produced by families in Chimayó that have created these works of art for centuries.

 Lunch: Lunch at selected restaurant from 11:00 - 12:30 PM.
 Afternoon: Bus continues on to Albuquerque.

You'll gain an overview of the geological aspects surrounding the city as well as learning some interesting facts about its history.

Upon arrival, you'll visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, dedicated to preserving and perpetuating Pueblo culture and advancing understanding by presenting with dignity and respect, the accomplishments and evolving history of the Pueblo people of New Mexico.

After the visit, bus will depart for Old Town Albuquerque. This charming area offers many examples of authentic adobe architecture; the beautiful old church there is open for you to visit, and you can explore Old Town with your group leader's guidance.

At 5:00, depart for dinner destination.

 Dinner: Dinner at Sweet Tomatoes restaurant from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Sweet Tomatoes offers an enormous salad bar, with many selections of breads, meats, desserts and more.

Bus departs for hotel and check-in.

 Evening: Check in at the hotel, and enjoy an optional video to be shown in a hotel meeting room by your group leader.

Day 7: Boca Negra Petroglyphs/Acoma Pueblo/Dinner and closing comments
(Saturday, June 30)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:00 - 8:00 AM.
 Morning: After a brief lecture from 8:15 - 9:15 AM, bus departs for Boca Negra Petroglyphs and then departs at 11:30 AM to continue on to Acoma Pueblo. Boca Negra Petroglyphs are fragile, unique cultural resources that can never be replaced and are part of the National Park system. Four to seven centuries ago, the Rio Grande's Pueblo people carved or painted images into the boulders along the 17-mile long section known as the West Mesa. As you listen to the ranger and walk some of the trails, you'll speculate what these images mean, why they were created and what the people who made them were like.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Yaak'a Café at the Sky City Cultural Center at Acoma Pueblo.
 Afternoon: Upon arrival at Acoma, you'll have a chance to see the pueblo's visitors' center prior to exploring, with a Native American guide, the mesa-top where the ancient part of Acoma Pueblo (2:00 PM) is located,

Acoma Pueblo, known as "Sky City," was settled possibly as early as A.D. 900. It is situated on top of a 376 foot high sandstone bluff. You'll learn about the Spanish conquistadors who occupied it in 1599, the filmmakers who helped build the road that goes to the top of the mesa and the 6,000 residents who today either live in two nearby villages or in the Pueblo itself. You'll walk through the ancient village, see the large mission church and meet some of the pueblo residents during your field trip.

Bus departs for Albuquerque at 4:00 PM.

 Dinner: Dinner from 6:00 - 7:30 PM at the hotel, with closing remarks to follow.
