The thrill of spotting any member of the Big Five elephants, leopards, lions, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo is reason enough to journey to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. But these magnificent creatures arent the only ones who inhabit the grasslands and deltas of the region. Hippos, zebras, giraffes and antelope are just a few other residents that can be spotted during game drives along the Okavango Delta or in South Luangwa National Park, while crocodiles and a myriad of bird species bask in the waters along the Chobe and Zambezi rivers. Join wildlife experts and local residents for an insightful exploration into the habitats and conservation issues surrounding Africas natural wonders.

Earths last Eden -- the Okavango Delta fans out over the Kalahari sands, creating thousands of tiny green islands that sustain lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard, elephant and innumerable antelope and bird species. On-site lectures introduce termites and their affect on the Okavango Delta, delta hydrology and geology and animal behavior.

Home to Africas largest elephant population, Chobe National Park boasts a mighty river, herds of big game and flocks of waterfowl winging toward the sunset. A day game-viewing cruise on the Chobe River explores this area. In a private reserve on the Upper Zambezi River, examine the social structure of elephants, the immense birdlife in the area and spot all of the Big Five except rhinos during game drives and a game-viewing cruise on the Zambezi River.

Helen Malisan
Helen Malisans passion for exploration began in high school when she visited Italy, her ancestral country. After completing her final year at school, she immediately joined South African Airways where she worked for 10 years. In 1993, her love for nature and South Africa inspired her to complete the necessary courses to become a wilderness excursion leader, spurring her career as a safari leader in Namibia and Zambia. Helen says her interest in people, nature and animals inspires her work.
 
Andre Joubert
Andre Joubert has held numerous positions in managing and providing wildlife education throughout Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. This South African-born outdoorsman served as park warden of Skeleton Coast Park in Namibia and chief warden of Botswanas Khama Rhino Sanctuary, whose objective was to save Botswanas last remaining White Rhinoceros population. Andre shares a passion for working with people and instilling his strong wilderness ethics in public education.
 
Benson Siyawareva
Benson Siyawareva was born in the remote village of Zaka in southern Zimbabwe. His love of nature started when he joined the Boy Scouts, where he experienced camping, wildlife tracking and viewing. Benson became a qualified, professional guide in 1988 and has been named one of the Best 15 Safari Guides in the Cond Nast Traveler magazine. His enthusiasm and vast knowledge never cease to amaze participants lucky enough to travel with him.
 
Lisa Reed
Lisa Reed was born in Zimbabwe, spent her school years in South Africa, and now lives in Botswana. She has worked or visited most Southern and East African safari destinations, and has managed safari camps on her own and with others since being in Botswana. Lisa has a natural affinity with children and enjoys passing on her years of experience and knowledge to the next generation. She has been leading safaris for Road Scholar for more than nine years.

  Description: An authentic, tented safari camp is set up in a private location with Hemingway-style safari tents. Each tent has two beds with linens and an attached bathroom with chemical toilet and bucket shower (hot water on request). All meals are taken in casual safari style near the campfire and shaded by many large trees.

  Room amenities: Tents have plentiful floor space and are tall enough to stand up in. Back wall is zippered and connects to bathroom area, so you do not exit the tent in order to access the shower and toilet. Tent walls have large screens allowing for ventilation and views; screens can be covered for privacy and warmth.
  Facility amenities: A separate dining tent is set up with a table and chairs; meals are taken here in the shade of the tent. Wake up calls are provided each morning, and laundry services are provided (included in the cost). Please note that under garments are not washed by the camp staff due to local customs.

  Description: Thorntree River Lodge is a wonderfully situated camp on the banks of the Zambezi River with comfortable stone and thatch chalets hidden in the tangle of lush riverine bush. All chalets have large private bathrooms and are shaded by a large thatched canopy. The atmosphere is informal and one of classic safari style. The wide sweeping panorama of the river lends a special magic to the location. Thorntree's riverside location and its unique position within the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park allows for a wide choice of activities, including sunset cruises, game-drives, cultural tours, fishing, and visit to Victoria Falls. The esteemed national park is a sanctuary for white rhino as well as a haven for many other species including giraffe, sable, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and a wide variety of birds.

Chalets include private bath with a bathtub/hand-held shower, outdoor shower, fan, and patio. Rooms have electrical outlets for recharging batteries and mosquito nets on beds.   Description: Mfuwe Lodge is situated in the heart of the South Luangwa National Park and is built between two spectacular lagoons. The open plan design keeps the comfort and relaxation of guests in mind, but also capitalizes on the fact that an African wilderness experience is a blend of colors, textures, sounds, aromas and sights unmatched anywhere else in the world. Each chalet has a large private deck overlooking one of the lagoons. From the comfort of the lodge you can view Africa's majestic wildlife as animals come down to drink. Elephant, hippopotamus, many antelope species and crocodiles are plentiful in this area.

  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Passport must be valid for at least six months past trip return date; US passports need a minimum of four blank visa pages (NOTE: blank visa pages, not the amendment/endorsement pages at the back); Canadian citizens need a minimum of six blank pages. A visa for Zambia is needed and can be obtained at the border (not included in program price); no visa needed for Botswana or South Africa. Visa prices in southern Africa can change erratically, so please be prepared by bringing extra money in US dollars cash. Signed liability waivers required for safari lodges and Program Provider (EXPLORE, Inc).

  Transportation to site: The arrival transfer from O.R. Tambo airport to the first hotel in Johannesburg is provided by hired coach; transfer time approximately 20 minutes. Typically only one transfer is provided, meeting SAA #208 from Washington-DC which arrives in the early evening. Taxis are available but not recommended for safety reasons; estimated taxi fare is ZAR 400. The Courtyard Hotel Eastgate also provides an airport shuttle service but is not always reliable as far as showing up when scheduled; approximate price ZAR 250 per person. Independent travelers are welcome to join the scheduled group transfer but Program Provider needs to know travel details in advance for head-count purposes. Program Provider can also assist in arranging a separate airport transfer if arriving at a different time from the group flight.

  Transportation from site: Group transfer from the last location to the airport included for everyone. The flight from Lusaka, Zambia to Johannesburg is also included in the program price. Upon arrival in Johannesburg you connect to international departures; no further ground transfers are needed unless ongoing travel is planned. Program Provider can help with ongoing travel arrangements if needed.

Day 1: Depart the U.S.

 Evening: Overnight flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.

Day 2: Arrivals/Orientation
(Wednesday, October 24)
   
 Afternoon: Arrive Johannesburg where you clear Customs and are met and transferred 20 minutes to the Courtyard Hotel. Enjoy the complimentary snacks and beverages during happy hour in the main lounge of the hotel.
 Dinner: Dinner with the group in the dining room.
 Evening: Orientation session and group introductions following dinner.

Day 3: Fly to Botswana/Drive to Moremi
(Thursday, October 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer to the Johannesburg airport to board your commercial flight to Maun, Botswana.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided.
 Afternoon: En-route to Moremi Game Reserve, you stop at the Matlapana Basket Cooperative where you view the making of, and have time to purchase, the beautiful handmade Botswana baskets. You hear a talk from the local head of the basket cooperative (a Motswana woman). Afterwards, there is a three- to four-hour drive in 4x4 vehicles through typical Botswana woodlands to Moremi, located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta; there is a good chance of seeing game along the way. Upon arrival at your private, tented mobile camp, you settle in and your group leader gives an overview of Botswana history and culture.
 Dinner: Appetizers and a feast prepared by the camp cook. Dine in the open air under the stars. Campfire after dinner.

Day 4: The Okavango Delta/Termites
(Friday, October 26)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Drive through a large variety of different vegetation types, down winding tracks, through mopane forests and across lush grasslands in search of plains game and other species. The scenic beauty of Moremi adds to your experience of Botswanas verdant Garden of Eden, the Okavango Delta.
 Lunch: At camp.
 Afternoon: During tea time, your group leader gives a lecture on termites and their affect on the environment. Afterward, embark on a game drive. Lion and leopard are commonly found as well as herds of buffalo, elephant and hippo.
 Dinner: At camp under the stars.

Day 5: Endangered Carnivores/Delta Hydrology and Geology
(Saturday, October 27)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Game drive to search for wild dog and other endangered carnivores.
 Lunch: At camp.
 Afternoon: Class on Delta hydrology and geology during tea time. Afterward, take one last game drive in Moremi keeping your eyes open for tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, elephant, sable and giraffe.
 Dinner: Enjoy sumptuous cuisine under the stars.

Day 6: Fly to Chobe National Park/Elephant Social Structure
(Sunday, October 28)
   
 Breakfast: At camp.
 Morning: Transfer to the Xakanaxa airstrip with game viewing en-route. Take a small aircraft charter from the airstrip to Kasane (Chobe National Park). Upon arrival in Kasane you are met and driven a short distance to the lodge.
 Lunch: Light lunch at the lodge.
 Afternoon: Before the afternoon activity, your group leader gives a lecture on elephant social structure and behavior. Embark on a game drive in open-air safari vehicles into Chobe National Park, moving slowly through the plains searching for predators and other game.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the lodge.

Day 7: Chobe Game Drive/Boat Cruise and Birds
(Monday, October 29)
   
 Breakfast: Light continental breakfast in the lodge restaurant.
 Morning: Depart on an early morning game drive into Chobe National Park, home to the largest elephant population in the world. Drive along the river, seeking out special sightings and searching for any lion or leopard kills that may have happened overnight. Return to the lodge where you have time to freshen up before you board your private game-viewing cruise on the Chobe River.
 Lunch: A light picnic lunch is served during the boat cruise.
 Afternoon: From late morning to mid afternoon, you explore the Chobe River by motorboat. Immerse yourself in the unique environment viewing numerous birds including sacred ibis, blue heron, goliath heron, saddle-billed storks, marabou storks and little egrets. Arrive back at the lodge and have some time at leisure before your group leader gives a lecture on birds.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the lodge.

Day 8: Drive to Zambia/Local Orphanage
(Tuesday, October 30)
   
 Breakfast: Full English or continental breakfast in the lodge restaurant.
 Morning: You have the opportunity for one last game drive in Chobe National Park (optional). After breakfast, you are driven to the Kazangula Border Post. Here you take a five-minute boat ride across the Zambezi River to Zambia. After you clear Zambian customs/immigration, a vehicle meets you for the transfer to Thorntree Lodge. The entire transfer is approximately 2-3 hours without game viewing en-route.
 Lunch: Lunch at the lodge.
 Afternoon: Transfer to a nearby local orphanage where you have a chance to experience Zambian life and culture, and interact with the children and foster parents. Upon returning to the lodge, your group leader gives an overview on Zambian history and culture.
 Dinner: Dinner at the lodge.

Day 9: Livingstone Museum and Victoria Falls
(Wednesday, October 31)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Your group leader gives a lecture on David Livingstone and his discovery of the Falls. Transfer into the old colonial town of Livingstone and visit the Livingstone Museum. The museum is located in the heart of town and is known for its archaeological and ethnographic displays. Its premier exhibit is a collection of letters, notes and other artifacts that belonged to David Livingstone. You also visit the famed Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is where the Zambezi River opens out into an extravaganza of roaring, spray-tumbled water, known to the locals as "Mosi oa Tunya" (the smoke that thunders). Finish the morning with a visit to the local crafts market in Livingstone.

Day 10: Fly to Mfuwe/South Luangwa Valley
(Thursday, November 1)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Transfer to the Livingstone Airport and depart on a scheduled charter flight to the Mfuwe Airport in the South Luangwa Valley.
 Lunch: At the lodge.
 Afternoon: Upon arrival into Mfuwe, you are met and taken by 4x4 vehicle to Mfuwe Lodge. After settling into your room, depart on a game drive for approximately two hours. Game drives in South Luangwa National Park are taken in open-air safari vehicles moving slowly searching for wild game.
 Dinner: At the lodge. Dinners here vary between a three-course meal and a buffet. Also, a traditional South African barbeque or braii, where guests eat in the outdoor eating area or boma," is offered at times.

Day 11: Bush Walk/Game Drive/Night Wildlife
(Friday, November 2)
   
 Breakfast: Early continental breakfast followed by mid-morning snacks in the bush (tea and coffee, muffins and biscuits)
 Morning: This morning you either participate in a guided bush walk with an armed guard or go on a game drive with refreshments and snacks. During the bush walk, your guide gives a lecture on animal tracking.
 Brunch: Brunch consists of a full buffet including many cooked breakfast and lunch items as well as salads and desserts.
 Afternoon: Leisure time during the heat of mid-day. You can relax around the pool or view game from the deck of your private chalet. Afternoon tea with lecture on the unique surrounding ecosystem and the structure of the Zambian National Parks. Afterward, enjoy a day-into-night game drive. While on night drives leopard, hyena, porcupine, civet, genet and honey badger are commonly sighted.
 Dinner: At the lodge.

Day 12: Tracking Wildlife/Local School and Village
(Saturday, November 3)
   
 Breakfast: Early continental breakfast at the lodge and mid-morning snacks on drive.
 Morning: Again this morning you have the choice of a game drive or a bush walk with an armed guide and an emphasis on spoor, vegetation, birds, insects and bush lore; discussion on how to track animals.
 Brunch: Full buffet.
 Afternoon: Visit to a nearby school, village and textiles manufacturing site. You are shown around the school and learn about the schools projects, as well as have the opportunity to interact with the children. You also interact with locals to learn about the villages tree planting and fish farming. Afterward, visit a textiles manufacturing shop. End the afternoon with a game drive that lasts into the early evening.
 Dinner: At the lodge.

Day 13: Lion Social Structure/Final Game Viewing
(Sunday, November 4)
   
 Breakfast: Early morning tea/coffee and continental breakfast.
 Morning: Search the surrounding area for animals that may have eluded you thus far.
 Brunch: Full buffet brunch followed by the mid-day at leisure.
 Afternoon: Over tea, your group leader gives a lecture on lion social structure and behavior. End the afternoon with one last game drive in the South Luangwa National Park.
 Dinner: Farewell dinner at the lodge.
 Evening: Enjoy one last evening as a group, reminiscing about the program's experiences.

Day 14: Fly to Lusaka/Departures
(Monday, November 5)
   
 Breakfast: At the lodge.
 Morning: Transfer to the Mfuwe Airport for an hour-long scheduled charter flight to Lusaka, Zambia.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided.
 Afternoon: Board a commercial flight to Johannesburg. Upon arrival in Johannesburg, connect to your international flight back to the U.S. or ongoing travel.

Day 15: Arrival Home
(Tuesday, November 6)
   
 Morning: Early morning arrivals back in the U.S.

  Livingstone (Victoria Falls) Elephant Interaction
The walk begins as the elephants head into the bush to naturally browse. Guests follow along and observe as these majestic animals feed, play, socialize and sometimes swim. The elephants wander through riverine bush and the banks of the Zambezi River. There is one guide per elephant to discuss all aspects of the African elephant as well as the bush. Time spent walking with the elephants is approximately 30 minutes. At the end of the walk, guests will have a chance to interact with the elephants.   Flights over Victoria Falls
Experience a birds eye view of the Victoria Falls on a thrilling flight over the Falls and the Zambezi River in a helicopter or Microlight aircraft. The helicopter is designed so all passengers have a good view. The Microlight has an open cockpit for the ultimate ride with the wind in your face. Fifteen-minute flights also go downstream over the Batoka Gorge and upstream over the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, an opportunity to see game in the park below.   Local Culture
Makuni Village tour: Chief Makuni invites visitors to his village, home to the Leya people. This is a unique opportunity to see how the local people live in a working village, not one built for tourists. Approximately 6000 people live here and a visit is a fascinating insight into their life style. A member of the village shows visitors around and they can see how traditional huts are built and decorated, take a look inside, meet the residents and see the locals at work.   Sunset River Cruise
The cruise is along the river boundary of the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, around Siloka Island and back to The Waterfront jetty. The total cruise time is approximately three hours. Sunset cruises arrive back after sunset. From the boats, sightings of elephant, giraffe and even rhino coming down to the river to drink are common. There are also abundant hippos, crocodiles and birdlife. All cruises have a complimentary bar and serve freshly baked snacks.
