New England’s islands and seaports have endured countless transitions and transformations over the centuries. Embark on a voyage of discovery into the mystique of summer on the water, taking in lighthouses, beaches and dunes, and the warm salt air breezes in timeless harbors. Delve into the history, art, literature and natural resources of Block Island, Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport and New Bedford.

Itinerary At-a-Glance

Day 1:
Independent arrivals to Warren, R.I./Embark Grande Caribe/Cuttyhunk Island, Mass.




Day 2:
Nantucket Island:

Enjoy a lecture at the Nantucket Whaling Museum and trace the rise and fall of the whaling industry through the museum's exhibits. Explore Nantucket Town -- sea captains' homes, cobblestone streets, and historic architecture -- on your own in the afternoon.



Day 3:
Martha's Vineyard:

Find hundreds of brightly painted "Carpenter Gothic" style summer cottages in the former Methodist camp known as Oak Bluffs, and learn from a local resident about the camp's historic past.



Day 4:
New Bedford, Mass:

Learn about this seaport's role in the whale oil industry in the 19th century and some of its famous residents, including Herman Melville and Frederick Douglass, on an expert-led walking excursion of the waterfront. Then, set sail across Buzzards Bay en route to Block Island, RI.



Day 5:
Block Island and Newport, R.I.:

A lecture about the natural history, human history and culture of Block Island, founded in 1661, will greatly enhance your morning coach excursion with an island resident. In Newport, learn about the famed Gilded Age "cottages" on a trolley excursion.



Day 6:
Arrive back in Warren, R.I., before breakfast/disembark/coach to Providence, R.I., airport






Grande Caribe

This comfortable, three-deck American ship is 183 feet long by 40 feet wide and can carry 86 passengers on an exclusive sailing for Road Scholar. Public areas linked by stairs include a dining room, lounge and sun deck. All cabins have air-conditioning and small, private bathroom.

3:00PM Welcome and registration in the hotel lobby. You will be staying at Johnson & Wales Inn that night.
  End of Program:
Independent departures from hotel parking lot. You will be staying at Grande Caribe the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Photo ID highly recommended; may be required by security procedures at certain venues.

Driving Directions
  From I-195 From I-195 in Massachusetts, take Exit 1. Follow Rt. 114A North straight through set of lights and bear left at the Old Grist Mill Restaurant. Turn right onto Rt. 44. The Inn is located a few hundred yards further on your right.
  I-95 North or South Take Exit 20 in Rhode Island to I-195 East. Then follow directions from I-195.
Elevation Note: Maximum altitude approximately 250' above sea level.

Equipment Requirements: Binoculars and camera highly recommended. Also sun protection for head, eyes, exposed skin.. Rain gear--not umbrella--a must.

 Afternoon: Welcome and registration at Johnson & Wales Inn.
 Dinner: Dinner and orientation at Johnson & Wales.
 Evening: Free evening to pack or party.

Day 2: Transfer from hotel to ship/Transit to Cuttyhunk Island/Briefing and free time
(Wednesday, August 18)
   
 Breakfast: After early luggage pull, buffet breakfast at Johnson & Wales Inn.
 Morning: Embarkation briefing at hotel, followed by coach transfer to ship. Embarkation will be followed by safety orientation and departure on cruise itinerary.
 Lunch: Lunch onboard.
 Afternoon: Depart from Warren RI, sailing Narragansett and Buzzards Bays en route to Cuttyhunk Island MA. Captain's welcome party en route.
 Dinner: Dinner aboard Grande Caribe.
 Evening: Briefing on Nantucket, followed by evening free to explore Cuttyhunk.

Day 3: Arrival/Nantucket Whaling Museum/Free afternoon
(Thursday, August 19)
   
 Arrive To: Arrive Nantucket Island after early departure from Cuttyhunk.
 Breakfast: Breakfast on board.
 Morning: Transfer by launch to Nantucket town landing. Visit Whaling Museum. Coach tour of island.
 Lunch: Box lunches delivered to landing/waterfront area.
 Afternoon: Afternoon free to explore Nantucket at leisure. Return to ship by launch.
 Dinner: Cocktail hour, followed by dinner.
 Evening: Sail from Nantucket via Nantucket Sound to Martha's Vineyard.

Day 4: Oak Bluffs/Field trip to Edgartown/Free evening
(Friday, August 20)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on board.
 Morning: Board buses for field trip to Oak Bluffs. Pass site of filming of motion picture "Jaws." Visit historic site of historic Methodist camp meeting with its tabernacle and surrounding community of several hundred brightly painted "Carpenter Gothic" style summer cottages. Town is also site of island's largest marina, and an historic operating Coney Island carousel.
 Lunch: Box lunches delivered to Oak Bluffs; picnic on beach.
 Afternoon: Board buses for transfer to Edgartown, historic whaling village with galleries, shops, museum, churches, waterfront with ferry to Chappaquiddick Island. Return to ship at Vineyard Haven by bus.
 Dinner: Pre-dinner cocktail hour, followed by dinner on board.
 Evening: Evening free to enjoy Vineyard Haven shopping and night life.

Day 5: Free time/Transit to Block Island/Free evening
(Saturday, August 21)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on board.
 Morning: Morning free to continue exploration of Vineyard Haven. All aboard for departure for Block Island. Sailing Vineyard Sound and Buzzard's Bay en route to Block Island.
 Lunch: Lunch on board en route to Block Island
 Afternoon: Talks on such subjects as natural history of the islands, Block Island briefing, etc., en route to Block Island. Arrival at Block Island.
 Dinner: Cocktail hour, followed by dinner on board.
 Evening: Evening free to explore Block Island shopping and night life, including restored historic movie theater.

Day 6: Block Island/Newport RI/Free evening
(Sunday, August 22)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on board
 Morning: Participants will divide into two groups, one to board bus for field trip around Block Island, the other to enjoy free time in town. On return of first trip, second group will board bus for field trip while first enjoys free time in village center and surrounding neighborhoods On return of second trip,. board ship for departure for Newport RI.
 Lunch: Lunch on board at sea en route to Newport RI.
 Afternoon: Arrive Newport mid -afternoon. Board coaches for field trip along Ocean Drive and around historic Newport. Return to ship for pre-dinner Captain's party
 Dinner: Farewell dinner on board.
 Evening: Evening free to enjoy Newport shopping, people-watching, night life.

Day 7: Disembarkation
(Monday, August 23)
   
 Breakfast: After early departure from Newport, breakfast on board during transit of Narragansett Bay en route to Warren RI for disembarkation.
 Morning: Arrive Warren RI for disembarkation and coach transfer to Johnson & Wales Inn, Seekonk MA. Independent departures from Seekonk
