Find hundreds of brightly painted "Carpenter Gothic" style summer cottages in the former Methodist camp known as Oak Bluffs, and learn from a local resident about the camp's historic past.
Learn about this seaport's role in the whale oil industry in the 19th century and some of its famous residents, including Herman Melville and Frederick Douglass, on an expert-led walking excursion of the waterfront. Then, set sail across Buzzards Bay en route to Block Island, RI.
Day 5: | Block Island and Newport, R.I.: |
A lecture about the natural history, human history and culture of Block Island, founded in 1661, will greatly enhance your morning coach excursion with an island resident. In Newport, learn about the famed Gilded Age "cottages" on a trolley excursion.
