Your instructor: Art Director Jim Schaeffer has been conducting the academic portion of our program for the last 10 years. His well versed understanding of the theatrical arts offers a vast knowledge on the subjects of this program. Established in the frame work of an interactive learning activity, even the many participants that return every year do not get bored, nor feel that it is a repeat experience from previous years. Three hours every morning, with our well versed theatrical art director, will extensively explore each play and the various points of view: from the writer, the director, the actors, theatre critics and class participants. He will challenge your mind in such a way that when you see the play it all comes together and unravels itself with ease. It is an experience worthy of your time.
On our first day, we will explore the beginnings of theatre. We will explore elements of Jim Schaefer’s History of Theatre model. We will look at two styles of acting, External and Internal and see how it applies to the plays we are about to see.
We will look at the story of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and compare the three theatres we are about to visit. In this way we can prepare for the performances that lie ahead.

Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1860–1937). A mischievous boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Indians, fairies and pirates, and from time to time meeting ordinary children from the world outside.

In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, the character Peter Pan has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works. Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish author and dramatist. He is best remembered for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. He is also credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon before he gave it to the heroine of Peter Pan.

Afternoon:
Depart from the Inn at 12.30 p.m. for a matinee performance at the Stratford Festival. We use a comfortable school bus for transfers to the theatre (45 minutes each way). Today's performance, Kiss Me, Kate, was a comeback and a personal triumph for Cole Porter. After several successful musicals in the 1920's and 1930s, notably Gay Divorce, Fifty Million Frenchmen, and Anything Goes, he experienced an equestrian accident in 1937 that left him in constant pain. Following the accident, he continued to write songs and musicals but with limited success, such as Mexican Hayride, Let's Face It!, and Something for the Boys, and some thought he was past his prime. Kiss Me, Kate was a response to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and other integrated musicals, and it proved to be his biggest hit and the only one of his shows to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. It won the first Tony Award presented for Best Musical, in 1949.
