Road Scholar’s
Spiritual Journey through India Excites Mind and Body
BOSTON, September 6 —India, a land of deep cultural
significance and breathtaking beauty, is also an ancient crossroads
of world religions. Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have each made a tremendous
impact on the country and its people. Celebrating India’s unique
cultures, customs and traditions, Road Scholar is offering a 16-night
educational adventure, A Spiritual Journey through India.
Road Scholars will go behind the scenes to trace the footsteps of Krishna,
Buddha and the Mughal emperors on a journey into the heart of India’s
spiritual heritage. Hindu holy men, and Buddhist monks will guide adventurous
travelers into the Eastern mind and soul. The program also includes
in-depth discussions of Islamic life, spirituality and culture. Participants
will experience sunrise at the magnificent Taj Mahal and meet artisans
descended from the Taj’s builders. Road Scholars will also pursue
the roots of Hinduism at temples throughout India, and spend two days
in Varanasi on the sacred Ganges River. Buddhist monks will educate
visitors at Sarnath, where the Buddha first preached, and at Bodh Gaya,
where he achieved enlightenment.
Along the way, Road Scholars will taste varied and delightful Indian
cuisine, study Mughal architecture and monuments through excursions
with local experts and enjoy an audience with a head lama. Road Scholar
has been offering this program since its inception, to rave reviews
from participants.
“Baby Boomers and succeeding generations of Americans have been
interested in India since the Beatles turned them on to Eastern philosophies,”
said Road Scholar President James A. Moses. “A Spiritual Journey
through India puts people of all faiths in the midst of three ancient
religions, allowing them to experience the vibrant cultures of the subcontinent.”
Launched in 2004 for adults of all ages, Road Scholar is an initiative
of Elderhostel, the world’s
largest not for profit educational travel organization for older people.
