Road Scholar Shakes, Rattles and Rolls onto Austin’s
Music Scene
Boston, MA- (October 31, 2005) An Austin musician is something
special – creating that toe-tapping, roof-raising blend of country
and blues that has made the city synonymous with great music. Next spring,
Road Scholar offers, Austin Express: Ridin’ the Music Train,
a four-night opportunity to experience Austin’s music scene -from
its roots in the ‘60s to its evolution into today’s “Live
Music Capital of the World.” Road Scholar, open to adults of all
ages, is an initiative of Elderhostel, the world’s largest not-for-profit
provider of educational travel programs for older adults.
The educational adventure combines visits to local landmarks, discussions
with key historians, music experts and musicians, and live performances
for a snapshot of this distinct part of Texas. Join music historian
John Wheat to examine the music archives at the University of Texas
-archived recordings, published commentary and criticisms, and personal
anecdotes- for a step back to Austin in the ‘60s. Meet club and
studio owners at the Cactus Café, at Antone’s and at a
prominent recording studio. Visit Barton Springs, a popular '60s hippie
hang-out; cruise around Austin on a "Dead Clubs" tour; learn
about Armadillo World Headquarters and Vulcan Gas Company; visit Shoal
Creek Saloon and other landmarks of Austin's popular culture. Stop by
Threadgill’s, the legendary hotspot, and meet the staff to discuss
the history of Kenneth Threadgill's filling-station-turned-beer-joint,
instrumental to the 1960s musical coming-together of “longhairs”
and "rednecks.”
Road Scholars dig into the blues, country, rock, gospel and other influences
that make Austin a unique musical crossroads. Visits with local musicians
bring music –both behind the scenes and onstage- to life at famous
clubs like Threadgill’s, the Continental Club and Stubb’s;
and ventures to recording studios and well-worn back-street bars will
reveal rising stars and the secrets of making music. Live performances
showcase local talent. A stop at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for a rousing,
gospel-infused service on Sunday morning rounds out the Austin music
experience.
