Road Scholar Launches First Golf Adventure on Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

BOSTON, April 4 - Golfers throughout the world long to play a Robert Trent Jones-designed course. The world’s foremost golf course architect, Jones designed nearly 500 courses throughout North America and around the world. For its inaugural learning adventure focused on golf, Road Scholar is pleased to offer not one, but seven rounds of 18-hole golf on four courses along the world-famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a spectacular network of 432 holes of golf on ten sites, a vast project and one of Jones’s last. Sportswriters have hailed the Trail as a Golf Mecca with some of the finest public courses in the world. Jones believed in artistic landscaping, liberal inclusion of bunkers and water hazards, and skillful placement of greens and other hazards to encourage daring play. Road Scholars will experience Jones’s vision firsthand, playing or discussing golf every day.

They’ll improve all aspects of their golf game with instruction from teaching pros. They’ll learn about golf-course construction, turfgrass research and course management at Auburn University. Duffers and scratch golfers will also spend an evening with the university’s powerhouse golf team.

The golf courses are the true highlights of the program. Over this seven-night adventure, Road Scholars will experience some of the most challenging golf courses on the planet. They’ll play two courses at Oxmoor Valley, two at the jewel of the Trail, Grand National, two at Capitol Hill, and conclude with a round at Ross Bridge.

The State of Alabama’s pension fund owns the courses, which serve as the fund’s major investment. Road Scholars will learn about the Trail’s significant and immediate economic impact on the state, through construction, job creation, and tourism. They’ll also explore the breathtaking, poignant Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, designed by artist Maya Lin.

“Road Scholars have been asking for an in-depth experience focused on golf since we launched the Road Scholar concept in 2004,” said Road Scholar President and CEO James Moses. “This adventure along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail offers many experiences for behind the scenes exploration in a small-group learning environment with terrific amenities, and of course, spectacular golf.”

Launched in 2004, Road Scholar is an initiative of Elderhostel, www.elderhostel.org, the world’s largest not-for-profit educational travel provider. For more information on Road Scholar, visit www.roadscholar.org or call 1-800-466-7762.
