ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
We’re always developing educational adventures that open windows to new places and probe fascinating topics. Check out our latest creations.
See all of our New programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Join lifelong learners from around the nation in the Black Hills of South Dakota on a quest for discovery 40 million years in the making. During this special Great American Get-Together, journey through the epochs from the era of the dinosaurs to the present as North America’s history of exploration, conflict and discovery unfolds before you. Consider how the hands of hard-rock gold miners came to carve Mount Rushmore out of granite and consider the geology that allowed the carving of another monument to the Native leader Crazy Horse. Stand atop that monument while you examine the lives of Native Americans before and during Custer’s 1870s exploration, meet with an author and photographer to interpret photographic images from the expedition and much more.

Highlights

• Feel the thunder under your feet as you attend Custer State Park's 50th Annual Buffalo Roundup.
• Enjoy the rare opportunity to Volksmarch to the top of Crazy Horse Mountain, only open to the public twice a year, and also attend a powwow with Native drumming, dancing and singing.
• In a once-in-a-lifetime meeting of four acclaimed reenactors from around the country, meet the Rushmore presidents in a face-to-face discussion of the founding principles of our nation.

Program Notes

Program limited to 200 participants, but the group will be divided into smaller groups for most activities.

Activity Notes

This is a moderate program with little required walking. The optional Volksmarch follows a route of six miles over hilly, rough terrain with some steep inclines.

Coordinated by Black Hills Educational Institute.
