Program #21645RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
We’re always developing educational adventures that open windows to new places and probe fascinating topics. Check out our latest creations.
See all of our New programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Get to know the historic city of Baltimore, an American urban gem on the Chesapeake Bay and the iron on which the American identity was forged. From your base in the beautiful and historic Mount Vernon Cultural District, explore the city as you delve into its influence on the American historical narrative. Learn how the nation was impacted when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad became the first to earn passenger revenues and consider the effects of Poe, Stein and other prominent Baltimoreans on the American literary identity. Examine as well the city’s role in the War of 1812 and the creation of America’s National Anthem, the “Star Spangled Banner,” celebrating its bicentennial in 2014.

Highlights

• Raise a carefully reconstructed Star Spangled Banner measuring 30 feet by 42 feet at Fort McHenry in celebration of the 2014 bicentennial of our national anthem, penned by Maryland native Francis Scott Key after witnessing the fort’s bombardment by British forces during the War of 1812.
• From a walk through the shipbuilding district of Fells Point to an exploration of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, study the scope of Baltimore’s maritime and industrial heritage with experts.
• Take a field trip to the American Visionary Art Museum, admire the painted screens of Baltimore’s iconic row houses and attend a seasonal performance in the Mount Vernon Cultural District.

Activity Notes

Walk up to two miles, some uneven surfaces, cobblestones, stairs; periods of standing in museums.
