Date Notes
EXPLORING AMERICA DURING THE 1950s: In the early 1950s the United States was riding a wave of post-war prosperity, a Baby Boom had taken hold and the crooners ruled the radio; but change was in the air. By decade’s end the U.S. would be entrenched in the Cold War and Space Race. Compare the presidencies of Truman and Eisenhower; discuss the successes and challenges. Learn more about the Red Scare and Sen. Joe McCarthy. It was the golden age of television and the beginning of rock-n-roll. Attend a performance of “October Sky” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Illinois.9/27/2015
DUOS: COMEDY TEAMS, POLITICAL COUPLES AND MUSICAL PARTNERS: Join us for a week devoted to twosomes. Learn more about comedy teams like Burns and Allen and discuss who was the better “straight man” and “comedian.” Watch some classic routines. Delve into the public and personal lives of famous couples who occupied the White House. John and Abigail Adams’ lives were quite different from those of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Explore Broadway composing teams like Rodgers and Hart. These sometime volatile partnerships produced some of the best loved musicals of all time. Attend a performance of “West Side Story” at The Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson.10/25/2015
GREAT MOMENTS IN WESTERN ART AND MUSIC: Esteemed professor Greg Athnos joins us a second time this year to lead a week-long program of some of his favorite lectures from the last 39 years teaching for Road Scholar. Beginning with the tomb paintings in the Catacombs of Rome and continuing through the Cathedrals of France, the Genius of the Renaissance, the rise of modern music in the Baroque, the classical genius Mozart, Beethoven’s ‘picture of the French Revolution’, the Romantics Schubert and Chopin, with the week concluding with the Impressionists Monet and Debussy. Attend a performance of the musical “A Wonderful Life” at The Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson.
