Road Scholar
Program #21392RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The “movies” have had an extraordinary impact on American society and psyches since the early 20th century. Join us for a multi-faceted examination of what may be our most significant cultural phenomenon. We will trace the evolution of movies as a reflection of archetypes and prevailing majority attitudes to industry efforts at self-censorship, and the current free market free-for-all. We will also consider the influence of history on movies and vice-versa, movies as propaganda, critics then and now, and technical advances from the time of Edison to the present day. As a special highlight, we will view and discuss clips from significant movies including the first western — “The Great Train Robbery” — and on through comedy and drama, musicals, mystery/suspense, and more.

Highlights

• View and discuss movies and movie techniques from the late 1920s to today.
• Discuss how film shapes our vision of history and the archetypes of how we see ourselves as Americans.
• Join us to focus on film as a mirror of society and its reflection of society and culture over the decades.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.
