Road Scholar
Program #21309RJ
17 Days | 16 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
From the capital city of Quito to the otherworldly Galápagos Islands, Ecuador’s legendary nine ecosystems are on display as you venture by railway, canoe, airplane, motor yacht, bus, raft and foot with our naturalists and local experts. On a nighttime canoe ride in the Amazon, spot a spectacled caiman. At 8,441 feet in the Andes, meet an Otavaleno weaver. Finally, board the 125-foot Tip Top IV yacht and explore the Galápagos’ volcanic archipelago to encounter unique birds, giant tortoises, sea-going iguanas, and playful sea lions.

Highlights

• Surrounded by breathtaking volcanoes in the highland town of Otavalo, experience its famed textile market and learn the Ouichua families’ traditional style of bread baking.
• Deep in the Amazon, view brightly colored parrots as they make their morning pilgrimage to the clay lick at Yasuni National Park.
• Hike up a dormant volcano on Bartolome Island to view lava bombs, spatter, and cinder cones then look for Galapagos penguins and tropical fish while snorkeling from the beach, within the shadow of Pinnacle Rock.

Program Notes

Quito, Ecuador has an elevation of 9,350-9,500 feet. Some participants find it helpful to fly into the city a day early in order to have extra time to rest and acclimate to the thinner air.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Walking and standing up to three hours on varied terrain and in hot, humid conditions. Get in and out of small boats. Wet and dry landings on islands. Elevations up to 9,600 feet.
