Program #8999RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The vibrant red Indian Paintbrush, the exuberant Flame Azalea, the delicate Showy Orchid — the wildflowers of Southern Appalachia are some of the most sought-after and exquisite flora in the United States. Walking the pathways of western North Carolina’s mountains, we will take our time to actually see, savor and sometimes smell the wondrous flowers of an Appalachian spring.

Highlights

• Learn about the life and botany of the mountains, then spend afternoons walking (on moderate trails) in search of orchids and trillium, plus many other wildflowers blooming along wooded paths.
• Examine how mountain ranges were formed and how this relates to the local ecology.
• Learn how weather affects the environment and why meteorologists have such difficulty predicting the weather.

Program Notes

Please note that while this program involves significant amounts of walking, the focus is on nature exploration, not hiking. Opportunities are available for traveling companions to attend a different program at Montreat during the same week. Click here to see a list of all programs at Montreat.

Activity Notes

Walking up to four miles on well maintained mountain trails that have uneven terrain, including rocks and roots.

Coordinated by Montreat Conference Center.
