Program #13609RJ
4 Days | 3 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Traverse hills and hollows, diverse ecological areas of the Shawnee National Forest and wetlands of the Cache River State Natural Area in this “Land Between the Rivers” where the Mississippi and Ohio converge. Led by expert birding instructors, learn about field identification, life histories, binocular use and other techniques as you look for resident species and seasonal visitors. Then go from grape to bottle with vintners who share their expertise and give you a taste of their flavorful wines.

Highlights

• Take extensive birding field trips that vary by season. In spring look for neo-tropical migrants and nesting bird species such as warblers, tanagers, and flycatchers; in the fall search for warblers, woodpeckers, raptors and waterfowl. Plus an evening “Owl Prowl.”
• Explore 300 million-year-old sandstone bluffs and a native cypress-tupelo swamp at the Heron Pond Nature Preserve and Cache River State Natural Area.
• Go “behind the vines” at two wineries to meet and talk with expert vintners, taste wines, and keep your eyes peeled for bird species on these beautiful properties.

Program Notes

So you can get the most out of your experience, all of our Birding programs have a maximum participant-to-instructor ratio of 14:1. Road Scholar birding programs are conducted in accordance with the American Birding Association’s Code of Ethics. Learn more at http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html
