Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Roseate Spoonbills, Northern Harriers, Tricolor Herons, Cormorants, Brown Pelicans and Pied-billed Grebes — just a few of the usual inhabitants of the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas on Mustang Island. On this active birding program, head out into open gulf beach, protected bays, salt flats, mud flats, prairies, freshwater ponds and brackish estuarine areas in search of many of the more than 400 species of birds spotted here throughout the year. Learn to identify the warblers, wrens, flycatchers, orioles and raptors that pass through during migrations and see why Port Aransas was deemed the country’s "Birdiest Small Coastal City" of 2012.

Highlights

• Benefit from the expertise of the staff at the Leonabell Turnbull Birding Center, considered a world-class birding destination where shorebirds, ducks, warblers, raptors, rails and alligators can all be seen.
• Watch for warbler fallouts at Paradise Pond, a freshwater staging ground for birds about to cross the Gulf of Mexico.
• Accompanied by experts in the field, learn not only about local bird populations but also about the fascinating ecology of the area.

Activity Notes

Walking up to one mile on mostly smooth paths, occasional uneven terrain.

Coordinated by University of Texas Marine Science Institute.
