Road Scholar
Program #18480RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Southwest Scholar Explores the Highlights of Arizona's Story
Explore the lives of four Arizona pioneer women who impacted the early direction and development of society in the state. Each woman reveals the kinds of people who settled in Arizona and what it took for them to remain in a desert climate. Investigate the basic categories of Southwestern art found in Arizona and New Mexico, as well as the cultural symbolism used in decorative design. Gain insights into the Southwest through a "tour" of how Hollywood film makers of the 20th century crafted specific cultural images of the Arizona Apaches and in what ways those images were consciously changed. Discuss how and why Arizona benefited from the Health Seeker Era of the 20th century and study the unique architecture that resulted from the Health Seeker Era, as well as its impact on the initiation of the Arizona tourism industry.

Acclaimed Arizona Artist Ted DeGrazia: His story and His works
Our discussion will include Ted DeGrazia's early work, his time spent in Mexico City working with the famous Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orosco, and his infamous "burning," when in 1976 he traveled to the Superstition Mountains and burned original paintings valued at $1.5 million to protest the inheritance tax. We will also discuss DeGrazia's Master's thesis which dealt with the relationship of color to sound as well as his use of adobe and other native materials in his buildings.
