Program #2637RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Spend a week at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge providing much-needed help maintaining one of the most popular federal parks, and the home to the famous Chincoteague ponies. Work amidst the wild ponies, repairing the fencing that protects them as you enjoy the beauty and serenity of Virginia's Eastern Shore. Additional projects of critical need are determined each year by the refuge manager, and have included clearing marsh trails, repairing the visitor center, and making bird boxes and exclosures for fragile bird populations. Every job is carefully supervised by work team leaders, and contributes to preserving this precious habitat.

Highlights

• Learn about the many varieties of migrating birds of Assateague, their temporary home, from an experienced birding expert.
• Discover Chincoteague’s unique culture and history as you engage local saltwater cowboys, decoy carvers, and watermen who carry on island traditions and practices.
• Enjoy the sea shanties and local lore of island musicians.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.
