EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Explore the history, landscapes and culinary delights of this region aboard an intimate, 62-guest expedition ship, National Geographic Sea Bird. A knowledgeable expedition leader, naturalist/geologist and historian illuminate our travels through the largest basalt flow, floods and mudslides in the history of the world. And local experts join us to expand on the themes of the expedition: the mountain crossing by the Corps of Discovery, the history of river navigation, the cataclysmic origins of the Columbia River Gorge. Plus, an onboard photo instructor helps you take your best photos yet and offers photography tips that last a lifetime.

Highlights

• Explore the history, landscapes and cuisine of the Columbia & Snake Rivers region aboard an intimate ship, enhanced by a knowledgeable expedition team and local experts, adding layers of insider knowledge.
• Follow the path of Lewis and Clark’s expedition, stopping at sites where they made camp.
• Enjoy locally sourced, sustainable food onboard; some cuisine is picked up from providers along the way, so it’s literally as fresh as can be.
• Travel through eight different locks that lift us some 700 feet in all – nearly ten times what transiting the Panama Canal entails.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Walking up to two miles per day over uneven, potentially slippery terrain; various options of distances are often available. Climbing in and out of Zodiac boats is necessary to go ashore. Optional kayaking.
