EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. Minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Bike several stretches of the Virginia Creeper Trail and break trailside to discuss the history, people and culture of this region. Learn kayaking technique from an experienced outfitter before setting out on the historic Clinch River in nearby Scott County. Evenings may include toe-tapping sessions of Appalachian music performed by local musicians, a historical tour of downtown Abingdon, and enjoying a performance at Barter Theatre.


• Bike the Virginia Creeper trail, with interpretive stops along the way.
• Paddle sit-on-top kayaks down the Clinch River with an experienced outfitter and stop along the river’s banks to learn about Great Appalachian Valley history and ecology.
• Attend a performance at the world-famous Barter Theater, State Theater of Virginia.

Program Notes

Bikes, helmets, kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddles provided.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Two days of biking 17 miles. Two days of kayaking up to four hours. Bikes, helmets, kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddles provided. No experience necessary. Elevation up to 5,520 feet.
