ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Learn new skills with canoeing buffs and hear naturalists and other experts relate the eons-old story of one of the world’s oldest rivers. Settlers named it the New River because it was unknown to the first explorers of the Atlantic Coast. Study this natural treasure as you experience it to the fullest — learning to kayak, paddle a canoe and navigate fast-moving rapids. Enjoy a section of the river by raft as experts navigate and naturalists point out the interesting features of local geology, flora and fauna.

• Experience the river’s thrilling side with trained pros on a whitewater rafting expedition down the 1,300 deep New River Gorge past old mining towns and ferry sites.
• Hike with naturalists along Little Stony Creek for two miles to Cascades Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia.
• Learn the basics of canoeing and kayaking, including different paddle strokes, boat maneuvering and how to tackle Class 1-2 rapids with your canoe.
