In the magnificent Rocky Mountains of Colorado, tackle challenging hikes to stunning peaks while you learn the geology, ecology and history of Colorado’s most scenic trails. Choose the basecamp that best suits you, from the remote and rugged Pingree Park to the historic mining towns of Ouray and Crested Butte, the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” Trek through extraordinary Rocky Mountain wilderness, including lush forests, flowering meadows, alpine tundra and rugged peaks. Discover the wildlife and natural history of these unforgettable landscapes from expert naturalists and geologists.


Highlights

• Choose your program date by your preferred basecamp, hiking from Pingree Park, Ouray, or Crested Butte.
• Hike historic mining trails and traverse mountain passes as experts reveal the most interesting geological features of the Rockies.
• Learn expert hiking techniques like light packing and high-altitude acclimatization, and develop leadership and teambuilding skills on these challenging treks.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Hikes vary by program date, and range between 4-16 miles per day at elevations of 8,000 to 14,000 feet. Pre-conditioning above 5,000 feet strongly recommended.

Based at Pingree Park. Tackle some of Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park’s most rewarding peaks: Signal Mountain, Stormy Peaks, and Fall Mountain. Learn light-packing techniques, expeditionary leadership skills and mountain safety. Climbs are non-technical but very strenuous and back to back. Pingree Park sits at 9,000 feet; pre-conditioning above 5,000 feet strongly recommended. Climbs are weather-dependent and 6-8 hours long, 8-16 miles daily round-trip with elevation gains of 3,500-5,000 feet. Hiking elevations of 12,500-14,000 feet.7/24/2016
Based at Ouray. Hike the magnificent San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado while learning about the local geology, alpine ecology and mining history. From your base in the historic mining town of Ouray — the “Switzerland of America” — take daily hikes on trails exploring forests, meadows of wildflowers, hot springs, and alpine tundra. Hiking 4-8 miles a day. Hiking elevations of 8,000-12,500 feet.8/14/2016
