Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The Adirondacks are the largest publicly protected area in the continental U.S. with vast sections designated as wilderness or wild forest. This birding haven is one of the best places in the country to observe boreal birds, including the much-sought-after Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, and Black-backed Woodpecker. Join us at the one and only Great Camp Sagamore to learn identification skills by sight, habit, and song guided by an expert birder. Each full day begins with treks into the pristine, deep woods. Search for Common loons, Vireos, fly-catchers, and an abundance of warblers as you pursue the Adirondack’s best known boreal birds. Plus, learn about the saga of Sagamore. A wonderful combination of natural history and social history in a unique setting!

Highlights

• Guided by a regional birding expert, learn what a boreal habitat is, as well as the nesting habits, migration, songs, and identification of native and migratory birds common to boreal regions.
• Enjoy birding treks and slide shows that demonstrate how to distinguish between native and migrating species.
• Glean insights into local Adirondack culture with talks or performances during your stay at Great Camp Sagamore.

Program Notes

This program is appropriate for both novice and veteran birders who want to experience a new ecosystem and see species unique to these habitats.

Activity Notes

Walking up to two miles over uneven terrain; some hills; activity up to two hours.
