EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
From garage and estate sales to pawn shops and auction houses, shopping for and identifying antiques is a fun way to learn about the stylistic hallmarks and aesthetic traditions of times past. Whether for private use or for profit, correctly appraising antiques takes practice, and this program in western Virginia provides a safe atmosphere in which to delve into American antiques and acquire methods of critical evaluation. Classroom lectures combine with hands-on comparison of examples, providing a primer in how to recognize valuable pieces and properly restore and preserve them. Field trips to Booker T. Washington National Monument and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest add a personal element to your examination of western Virginia antiques.

Highlights

• Compare and contrast the various furniture styles established in Colonial Virginia.
• Visit Poplar Forest - Thomas Jefferson's personal retreat - and marvel at Jefferson's architectural and horticultural brilliance.
• Visit a local antique establishment and put classroom knowledge to good use by identifying period pieces and gauging authenticity.

Activity Notes

Walking and standing for up to one hour.
