Road Scholar
Program #16819RJ
4 Days | 3 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Discover the treasures of Western Canada’s oldest city. Victoria’s history as a thriving commercial and naval port and the seat of colonial and provincial governments is reflected in stunning features throughout the city, from the Gold Rush-era mansions to delightful Butchart Gardens and the grand Empress Hotel. Examine the architecture of historic neighborhoods like Rockland, developed by the famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Learn the story of Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish-Canadian miner, industrialist and politician.

Highlights

• A local expert reveals the colorful story of Butchart Gardens as you walk among its stunning floral displays and fountains.
• Discover the neighborhoods of Victoria where governors, merchant barons and other elites built their luxurious homes.
• Enjoy a behind-the-scenes visit to the Empress Hotel, a landmark chateau-style hotel that has hosted royalty and was a favorite of Rudyard Kipling.

Program Notes

This program may only be taken as an extension to Program #3844 Canadian Explorer.

Activity Notes

Walking up to two miles per day, mostly on flat terrain. Some (optional) stairs at historic sites.
