ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. Minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Learn about the hearty people who have put their indelible stamp on the culture, music and history of Appalachia as you explore three enriching topics at the historic Lambuth Inn overlooking the picturesque Lake Junaluska in the mountains of Western Carolina. Scottish music is omnipresent in Appalachia — learn about its source in the homeland! Tune up your own vocal chords and join in songs beckoning the heart of local culture. And explore the sobering story of Cherokee history that dates back hundreds of years, up to today. Enjoy a free afternoon to exlore the nearby Biltmore Estate, the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and more.

Highlights

• Answer a fascinating question — Who are the peoples of Scotland? — using the songs of Scotland to delve into the history of a magic land.
• Engage in a delightful exploration and participation of Appalachian balladry, folk songs, dulcimer and shaped note singing.
• Walk through hundreds of years of Cherokee culture and history, including one of America’s darkest tragedies, the Removal of tribes to the West.

Activity Notes

Minimal walking and standing on this program.
