Road Scholar
Program #21592RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
We’re always developing educational adventures that open windows to new places and probe fascinating topics. Check out our latest creations.
See all of our New programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Join us for an unrivaled museum experience in four remarkable art institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area: the de Young Museum, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Asian Art Museum and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. A combination of in-depth lectures and gallery visits will expose you to the inner workings of the museum world and the compelling San Francisco art scene. Gain knowledge about the roles of collectors, museum directors, curators and conservators; consider why institutions need mission statements, policies and procedures; take a crash course in art handling, storage and conservation; learn how museums aim for best practices and plan for disasters; and hear the behind-the-scenes stories about what happens when a Picasso turns up in storage, the traveling exhibit is towed for double-parking and a donation goes bad.

Highlights

• Take a field trip to Stanford University and its Cantor Arts Center, home of the largest collection of Rodin sculptures outside of Paris.
• Enjoy a performance by the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
• Discover the local art scene at SOMArts, dedicated to cultivating artists on the community level.
