Program #4650RJ
7 Days | 6 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The Dickens Universe is an annual gathering of scholars, teachers, and members of the general public who share a love of Dickens's novels and his era. In 2015, the Universe will feature "Martin Chuzzlewit" in conjunction with his 1842 travel book, “American Notes.” Dickens’s flamboyant vision of the brash young republic is evident in both books, along with his powerful critique of selfishness in both its American and British incarnations. “Chuzzlewit” is also perhaps his funniest novel, full of comic grotesque characters including Pecksniff and Mrs. Gamp, but with darkly sinister overtones of violence and greed. The festive week-long program includes lectures by distinguished scholars, small seminars, films, teas, and Victorian dancing. Enrollment is limited. Register early!

Highlights

• Explore "Martin Chuzzlewit” and “American Notes" in small discussion groups and lectures by distinguished international faculty.
• Enjoy afternoon tea served by the Friends of the Dickens Project.
• Immerse yourself in the world of Dickens at a grand party and an evening of Victorian dancing.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.
