ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
We’re always developing educational adventures that open windows to new places and probe fascinating topics. Check out our latest creations.
See all of our New programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Program intended for grandchildren from 9 - 12 years of age.

You and your grandchild will have your own fish stories to tell after fishing together in the Weeks Bay estuary on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, accompanied by local experts who teach you all aspects of a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Explore the marine life of the greater Mobile Bay estuarine system to learn how to identify your catch, and find out why Mobile Bay is the only place in the world with regular occurrences of the jubilee, a natural phenomenon in which teeming throngs of crabs, shrimp and other sea life leave deeper waters and swarm the shallows along the coast. Cap off this adventure of a lifetime with your grandchild by taking a ride on a pontoon boat into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the second-largest delta in the United States.

Highlights

• Climb aboard the USS “Alabama” battleship and the USS “Drum” submarine, and explore a variety of military vehicles and aircraft.
• On an afternoon sail on Mobile Bay and around Mobile Bay Lighthouse, hoist the sail, take the wheel or just sit back and enjoy as captain and crew narrate your voyage.
• Discover marine life while seine fishing, learn to canoe on Weeks Bay, explore the science museum and more.

Program Notes

Personal fishing equipment preferred, but not required. Inshore saltwater fishing requires light tackle.

Activity Notes

Get on and off boats, sometimes from floating docks requiring balance. Standing up to one hour during fishing lessons. Visit to battleship last more than two hours, involves climbing up and down ladders on a boat and submarine.

Coordinated by University of South Alabama.
