Program #19427RJ
5 Days | 4 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Located on the Pacific Flyway and at the convergence of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the rich marine, estuarine and old-growth forests of greater Whidbey Island allow for unparalleled viewing of migrating and resident shore, upland and songbirds. With an expert ornithologist on this birding adventure, spot plovers, marbled murrelets, shearwaters, phalaropes, grebes and more. Our birding will take us from Dungeness Spit, to Deception Pass, Padilla Bay and more as we explore and bird for seabirds and shorebirds on Whidbey, Samish and Fidalgo Islands.

Highlights

• Spot shore and upland songbirds on ornithologist-led field trips to out-of-the-way seaside habitats and protected areas such as Dungeness Spit National Wildlife Refuge, Deception Pass Gorge, Alta Spit, and Samish Island.
• Search for offshore and shorebirds aboard a special chartered boat excursion. Additional sighting opportunities aboard a ferry to Port Townsend.
• Go behind the scenes for a special visit to Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Established trails and observation deck provide ample opportunity for viewing many birds.

Program Notes

So you can get the most out of your experience, all of our birding programs have a maximum participant-to-instructor ratio of 14:1. Road Scholar birding programs are conducted in accordance with the American Birding Association’s Code of Ethics. Learn more at http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html
