Road Scholar
Program #17909RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Begin your journey in Palm Springs and discover the two enchanting deserts that meet in Joshua Tree National Park: the Mojave, with its bare-rock outcroppings and the trees of the park’s name, and the Colorado, with its flowering creosote bushes and diverse cactus gardens. Study the natural architecture and origins of the park's landscape, and hear the human story of the desert. At night, spot constellations among the magnificent blanket of stars.

Highlights

• Led by a park ranger, explore Keys Ranch, a National Historic Register site where a family raised five children in this remote location.
• With experts from the Desert Institute, experience the two large desert ecosystems — the Colorado and the Mojave — that come together in Joshua Tree National Park.
• Discover the remarkable adaptations of plants and animals to flourish in an environment of heat, wind and sand.

Activity Notes

Walking up to two miles a day on uneven, soft-sand trails, some unpaved terrain. Elevations of 3,000-6,000 feet.
