ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging

See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
The Shawnee National Forest claims five different ecological divisions between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. By canoe, foot and horseback, experience for yourself why southern Illinois is a close-kept secret of outdoor enthusiasts. Observe eagles, herons, egrets and aquatic life along the Cache River, discover water tupelo trees and the “knees” of the bald cypress in the wetlands, and pass between sandstone bluffs and through ancient canyons as you learn aboutf the vast and diverse Shawnee.

Highlights

• Survey sandstone formations unique to the region on a hike to the highest free-falling waterfall in Illinois.
• Spot red-eared sliders sunning themselves and watch for bald eagles perched while canoeing on Lake Echon.
• Tell stories, sing songs and share memories around the campfire as you rest for the next day’s trail ride.

Activity Notes

Hiking 3.5 miles over woodland, some rocky terrain. Paddling canoe 1.5 miles on flat water. Horseback riding three hours: one hour of instruction, two-hour trail ride.

Coordinated by Camp Ondessonk, a Catholic retreat center.
