Road Scholar
Program #7301RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Just outside Williamsburg, historic plantations and mansions grace the Virginia countryside. Seats of power and wealth for three centuries, these architecturally fascinating structures range from magnificent Georgian manors on the James River to a modest streamside farmhouse. Explore this world of the landed gentry whose complex lifestyles mirrored aristocratic English society. And for a true taste of the times, enjoy strolling musicians during lunch at a Colonial tavern.

Highlights

• Explore 17th-century Bacon's Castle, learning how one of America’s oldest brick homes was captured by partisans during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676.
• Investigate an urban plantation at the Wythe House complex in Williamsburg, a setting that in many ways mirrors the great rural estates.
• Wonder at the luxury displayed in two of the great James River Plantations — Shirley and Berkeley — occupied over several centuries by some of the First Families of Virginia.
