Road Scholar
Program #20673RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Share an in-depth study of the piano and its amazing versatility, from its evolution to the development of piano performance since its inception over two centuries ago. Explore Mozart's sonatas, which exhibit a grace and elegance of style, and investigate Beethoven’s early, middle and late sonatas, which display a wide emotional range. Explore the kaleidoscope of challenging repertoire for two pianists, including Bach’s energetic double keyboard concertos; Mozart’s elegant Sonata in D Major for Two Pianos; French, Spanish and Norwegian contributions; and Samuel Barber’s dancing “Souvenirs.” Take a journey of music history from the baroque era to the 20th century via repertoire for piano four hands.

Highlights

• Compare and analyze recorded performances of great pianists Ignacy Paderewski, Alfred Cortot, Joseph and Rosina Lhevinne, Dinu Lipatti and others.
• Study several Haydn sonatas which show his humor and wit, as well as sonatas that are more serious.
• Trace the piano’s role in the history of recorded sound.
