Road Scholar
Program #21357ENZ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Inspired by participants who took our popular program “Hike the Appalachian Trail in Four States!” (#18537), this hiking adventure takes on a different section of the trail — “The Maryland Challenge” — stretching 41 miles from the Mason Dixon Line to the Potomac River over relatively easy terrain. They call it the “Maryland Challenge,” because of the super-endurance hikers who tackle all 41 miles in a single day. We’ll span the state, covering the distance at a more leisurely pace over four days, meeting some knowledgeable locals along the way.

Highlights

• Brave the steepest descent in Maryland down to a small tributary of Grove Creek and cross Little Antietam Creek on your way to summit Quirauk Mountain.
• Meet a Civil War expert who transports you back in time to the fierce fighting that took place across the face of South Mountain, then hike in the area the next day for onsite interpretation
• Follow a portion of the C&O Canal Towpath along the Potomac River to historic Harper's Ferry.

Activity Notes

Hiking up to twelve miles, some uneven terrain.

Coordinated by Shepherd's Spring Outdoor Ministry Center.
