ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Make your way to Southern California to ring in 2016 with a New Year’s Gala, celebrate Shabbat with a traditional celebration and dinner, and engage in a scholarly investigation of several Judaic topics. Numbering only 20,000 in 1945, today there are an estimated 350,000 Chassidim in the world. Explore this population explosion and the varied factors that contributed to it. Next, transition to Paris in the 1920s to learn about its appeal to Pissarro, Modigliani, Soutine, Rivera, Chagall and other Jewish artists enticed away from their homelands to find family in one another. Finally, examine cinema as the ideal lens by which to understand Israel’s history, culture and challenges.

• Take an insider’s view of the Chassidim, tracing the origins of the movement, studying the lives of outstanding Chassidic rebbes, debunking stereotypes and more with an esteemed instructor.
• Led by a published author and recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, be conveyed to Paris in the bohemian 1920s to learn about immigrant Jewish artists who thrived there.
• Use American, Israeli and European movies as text for an examination of Israeli society, under the leadership of an adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University.
