EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Established in 1930 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a working ranch and firefighting center for the U.S. Forest Service, the historic Ninemile Ranger Station continues to serve an important role as a packing training center and stock facility in the Lolo National Forest. Help to preserve this essential site — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — as you pick up a paintbrush, wield a hammer and assist with various jobs to maintain the integrity of Ninemile’s Cape Cod-style buildings and fences.

Highlights

• Join a staff member for a historic exploration of the Ninemile Ranger District compound and take in a packing demonstration.
• Consider the vast importance of fire prevention during a presentation by a Park Ranger, and learn about the stewardship of mission of Wildland Fire Operations.
• Learn about the region’s elk population and habitat conservation during a field trip to the Elk Country Visitor Center.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Walking up to one-half mile to work site; manual labor including painting or staining, repairing or rebuilding stock ramp and fences; elevations of 3,500 feet.

Coordinated by University of Montana Western.
