Road Scholar
Program #8599ENZ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
For more than a century, the Mayo Clinic has led the world in state-of-the-art medical treatment. Here medicine has been transformed into a cooperative science, one in which clinician, specialist and lab worker unite for the good of the patient. On this behind-the-scenes exploration, gain a privileged perspective on the clinic’s development into a world-class facility that has treated 6 million people and counting. Along the way, see where medicine has been and where it is going as Mayo Clinic staff (Western Medicine) and practitioners of integrative therapies (Eastern Medicine) take you inside the world of complementary medicine.

Highlights

• Get rare access to Mayo Clinic doctors and specialists in discussions about recent advances in preventative medicine and the effectiveness of integrative health care in treating injuries.
• Enjoy field trips to the Mayowood House - the historic home of the Mayo family - as well as to the Center for Innovation and the clinic’s bio-imaging lab.
• Discover facts and dispel myths about how your own health can be improved with diet and weight-management and try out tai chi, qui gong and other exercise strategies for keeping fit.
Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Activity Notes

Walking up to six city blocks over flat terrain. Elevators available.

This week will focus on Western Medicine and the reductionist approach used to try and locate where the organs, cells, and molecules are in trouble. Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, prostheses, biologics, ionizing radiations, and others.6/21/2015
This week will focus on Eastern Medicine. Learn about Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), which has never been more popular, with nearly 40 percent of adults report using it. Find out how practitioners are embracing CAM therapies, often combining them with mainstream medical therapies - spawning the new term "integrative medicine." Not just a single practice or remedy, study how practices center on a philosophy and energy in your body. Examples include: Ancient healing systems, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy. Explore how mind-body techniques strengthen the communication between your mind and your body. CAM practitioners say these two systems must be in harmony for you to stay healthy. Examples of mind-body connection include meditation, prayer, relaxation, and art therapies.7/27/2015
